This is good news/bad news. Generally, I am not a fan of what the home run derby can do to someone's swing, as we witnessed in Bobby Abreu's Home Run Derby championship. Abreu won the 2005 derby hitting an unprecedented 24 home runs in the first round. Abreu had 18...

Howard Out 6-8 Weeks with Torn Meniscus; Halladay Progressing

Ruben Amaro said today that Ryan Howard will miss 6-8 week as the result of an MRI showed a torn left meniscus for the first baseman. There is no word yet on when the surgery will occur, although it will happen soon. Darin Ruf will get the majority of the reps in Howard’s spot. Howard had hit well since June 1, putting up a .885 OPS over his last 30 games. However, the pain in...

Lannan Twirls A Gem In Phils Win

John Lannan was unhittable on Monday night at CBP (Photo: AP). Ruben Amaro publicly challenged his played when he decreed this 10-game homestand the tipping point of the 2013 season.  So far so good through four games, as the Phillies topped the Nationals on Monday night, 3-2, to climb within 2.5 games of second place Washington. John Lannan (2-3, 4.26 ERA) threw eight innings of...

Papelbon staying in Philly ... for now

Enough, for now, about the possibility of the Philadelphia Phillies trading Jonathan Papelbon. They need to add a reliever, not subtract one. The Phillies are in the midst of a mini-surge, even without one-time National League MVP Ryan Howard. They have won five of six to close within 7.5 games of first place in the NL East, and 5.5 of the second wild-card spot. The Phillies are...

PN Interview: Phils Director of Player Development Joe Jordan

Joe Jordan, photo- Jay Floyd On Sunday, prior to Reading’s game in Trenton, I spent some time chatting with Phillies director of player development Joe Jordan regarding as many subjects as I could, before I felt like I might be keeping him from something important on his chiming cell phone.  The topics included the Maikel Franco and Cody Asche 3rd base prospect jam, lefty hurler...

Rangers rumors: Texas would ‘love’ to trade for Phillies’ Cliff Lee

Danny Knobler of CBS Sports points out that the Texas Rangers have the money and prospects to make a big splash this summer since the team avoided acquiring players such as Zack Greinke, Josh Hamilton, Justin Upton and James Shields this offseason. Knobler says the Rangers would “love” to trade for Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Cliff Lee, but it doesn’t appear ...

Ryan Howard Will Need Surgery on Left Knee, Expected to Miss 6-8 Weeks

Ryan Howard was placed on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his left knee on Saturday, but the bad news gets worse for the Philadelphia Phillies. On Monday, an MRI confirmed a torn meniscus in his left knee that will require surgery. The injury is expected to sideline the first baseman for 6-8 weeks, according to ESPN. No date for surgery has been set at this time. Howard...

Michael Young contributing to awful Phillies defense

Michael Young contributing to awful Phillies defense by Scott Butler 7/7/13 The headline for last night’s blowout loss on phillies.com was “Kendrick gets knocked around by Braves.” Kendrick’s line supports that claim, as KK allowed 6 runs in 5 innings. But the more appropriate headline might be “Kendrick struggles and defense lets him down.” The box score shows only...

He was 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA and one save at Double...

Phillies Take Game 2 of Nationals Series

The Phillies will at least half the series against the Nationals with a win tonight. Hamels was able to move up to 4-11. Cole Hamels pitched well until the 8th. He was able to work his way out of a bases loaded situation without giving up a run. He gave...

Why Trading Cliff Lee Right Now Makes Most Sense for Phillies

Photo Credit: Kevin Durso, Philliedelphia It's July 9. Anyone can look at their calendar and figure that out, and it's not a date that is particularly pertinent to the game of baseball. At this point it is a matter of looking forward. A week from today, Major League Basbeall will...

Phillies Look For Hope As Pettibone, Medlen Square Off In Series Finale

Well the Phillies certainly looked lost last night. A bad start from Kyle Kendrick followed by a lack of offensive production from the Phillies offense led to the Phils' 46th loss of the season. The Braves blasted 19 hits enroute to their 50th win of the year. Kyle Kendrick struggled...
