Tigers reserve utilityman Don Kelly hasn’t gotten a whole lot of run the last couple weeks, so when he gets into the game he needs to make the most of it.  During Thursday’s matinee against the St. Louis Cardinals, Tigers’ skipper Jim Leyland penciled Kelly into his starting lineup manning right field.  In two at bats, Kelly grounded out to first and walked, so there wasn’t much excitement there.

Instead of in the box or on the basepaths, Kelly decided to show off his talents in the outfield.  On a Matt Holliday pop-up down the right field line, Kelly made a nice running catch by the stands that jut out toward the field.  Again, not getting regular playing time, Kelly used this play to show off what he’s been working on – his freestyle skills.

After making the catch, Kelly used the waist-high fence to perform some sort of maneuver that shouldn’t be tried by an amateur.  Now, had Derek Jeter made this running catch, ESPN would have cut into regularly-scheduled programming to show it.  When Don Kelly makes the grab, you see it hours later on It’s Always Sunny in Detroit.  It’s cool.  We’re here for you, Don.

The play resulted in Rafael Furcal tagging up and scoring from third base for the Cardinals only run of the game. The Tigers won 2-1. And Kelly’s freestyle act cost him a bruised knee. He left the game shortly after the play.
