Derek Jeter made his season debut for the Yankees on Thursday after missing the first 91 games of the season recovering from a broken ankle suffered during last year's playoffs. The captain didn't play the field at all, and went 1/4 with an RBI and a run scored. His lone hit was an infield single, mainly caused by the fact that Miguel Tejada was the Royals' third baseman, and he mishandled a relatively routine slow roller down the line. However, Jeter ended up leaving the game early due to a tight right quad...of course. It never ends. PIC OF THE DAY \Jon Jay slides for a ball for whatever reason. It didn't go well. (David Banks-USA TODAY Sports) Game of the Night: Diamondbacks 5, Brewers 3. Milwaukee took an early 3-0 lead in this one, and they expected that to hold all game. Well...it didn't, even with Yovani Gallardo on the hill. Arizona got on the board in the fifth with a two-run triple from Adam Eaton, cutting the Brewers' lead to a run. the Diamondbacks tied the Mae at three in the sixth following a Jason Kubel sac fly. In the eighth, Arizona jumped on top following a two-run single from Martin Prado. Brad Ziegler, and *not* the Heath Bell Experience, shut the door in the ninth to seal the win for the D-Backs. Pitching Lines of the Night: Edwin Jackson and the Cubs shut down the Cardinals 3-0, as Jackson allowed three hits over seven scoreless innings, striking out five without a walk. Danny Salazar of the Indians impressed in his first major league start as Cleveland beat Toronto 4-2, giving up one run on two hits in six innings, striking out seven and walking one. Chris Capuano pitched well for the Dodgers in their 6-1 win over the Rockies, giving up six hits over 6 1/3 scoreless, punching out eight without a walk. Matt Moore dominated the Twins (at times) in Tampa Bay's 4-3 victory, giving up three runs on three hits in 7 1/3 innings, striking out ten and walking two, earning an All-Star Game nod as well due to Yu Darvish's injury. Madison Bumgarner pitched well for the struggling Giants in their 4-2 win in San Diego, allowing two runs on four hits in seven innings, striking out six and walking one. Hitting Lines of the Night: Alejandro de Aza played well for the White Sox in their 6-3 win over the Tigers, going 3/5 with two runs, a double, and a homer. Newly named NL All-Star Freddie Freeman helped the Braves to a 6-5 win over the Reds, going 3/4 with a double and four RBI, while teammate Justin Upton (who lost his All-Star starting job on the last round of voting) went 3/4 with two runs, an RBI, and a double. In the Rockies' loss to the Dodgers, Carlos Gonzalez went 3/4 with a solo homer before dropping out of next week's Home Run Derby. In the win, Mark Ellis of the Dodgers went 3/4 with a walk and four RBI. Jacoby Ellsbury helped the Red Sox to an 8-7, ten inning comeback win over the Mariners, going 2/4 with a homer, two RBI, and two walks. Other Games: The Phillies muted the Natitude, topping Washington 8-4 to take three out of four in the series. The Orioles beat the Rangers 3-1, and yes, Chris Davis homered again. What You Missed: The ten players most likely to be traded this month. Today's Games: Chris Tillman and the Orioles host Mark Buehrle and the Blue Jays in a crucial AL East matchup. Good ol' Bruce Chen starts for the Royals in Cleveland against Corey Kluber. Bronson Arroyo and Kris Medlen duel in Atlanta. Hiroki Kuroda and the Yankees host the Twins. Doug Fister and the Tigers welcome the Rangers to Detroit. Jeremy Hefner and Charlie Morton will battle in Pittsburgh. Jarred Cosart makes his major league debut for the Astros in Tampa against David Price and the scorching Rays. Heh, scorching Rays...get it? Stephen Strasburg starts for the Nationals in Miami. Pat Corbin and the Diamondbacks host the Brewers. John Lackey and Jarrod Parker duel in Oakland. Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers host the Rockies. National TV: Rangers-Tigers (7 PM, MLB Network), Reds-Braves (7:30, MLB Network) MLB.tv Free Game: Rockies-Dodgers (10 PM) Pitching Matchup of the Day: John Lackey vs Jarrod Parker (10 PM, Boston at Oakland) Enjoy your day of baseball, everyone.
