Remember when the Royals were supposed to make a run at the AL Central crown? After taking three out of four from the Red Sox and winning their series opener with the Marlins, Kansas City is 2-6, scoring a total of just 16 runs in those eight games. They've fallen to 8.5 games back of the Tigers in the AL Central, and are eight games back in the AL Wild Card race, falling behind the division rival Indians in the process. So much for trusting the process... PIC OF THE DAY Giancarlo Stanton takes pride in his defense. (Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports) Game of the Night: Giants 3, Red Sox 2. Boston led 2-1 going into the eighth against a scuffling Giants offense. Junichi Tazawa came in for the bottom of the eighth and after getting Gregor Blanco to ground out, allowed a pair of singles to Marco Scutaro and Brandon Belt. Buster Posey followed with a sac fly to tie the game and deprive Jake Peavy of a win. In the bottom of the ninth, the wheels fell off for Franklin Morales. He struck out Brandon Crawford to start the inning, allowed a single to Roger Kieschnick, and got Joaquin Arias to line out. Needing just one out, Morales proceeded to walk pinch hitter Andres Torres and hit pinch hitter Hector Sanchez. Exit Morales, enter Brayan Villarreal in his first appearance with the Red Sox. Villarreal didn't throw Scutaro a strike, and he didn't swing either, leading to a four pitch walkoff walk to end the game. Pitching Lines of the Night: In Arizona's 5-2 win over Cincinnati, Pat Corbin threw a complete game for the Diamondbacks, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out ten without a walk. AJ Burnett dazzled the Padres in Pittsburgh's 8-1 win, giving up one run on four hits in seven innings, walking one and striking out seven. Sonny Gray pitched well for the A's in their 7-4 loss to the Mariners, allowing two runs on two hits in seven innings, walking a pair and punching out seven. John Danks shut down the Royals in Chicago's 2-0 victory, giving up seven hits over eight scoreless frames, walking one and striking out two. CJ Wilson had a good game in the Angels' 4-1, 14 inning loss to the Indians, allowing one run on four hits in 7 1/3 innings, striking out five and walking three. Hitting Lines of the Night: The Yankees swept the Blue Jays in a doubleheader 8-4 and 3-2, with Robinson Cano going 4/4 with a double, a homer and four RBI in game one and adding a pair of singles and an RBI in game two. Justin Morneau showed flashes of brilliance in Minnesota's 6-3 win in Detroit, going 4/5 with a double, a homer, and four RBI. Nick Franklin spurred the Mariners to a win in Oakland, going 2/4 with two runs, three RBI, and a homer. Yadier Molina continued his hot hitting since his return from the DL in the Cardinals' 6-3 loss to the Brewers, going 2/4 with two runs, two RBI, a double, and a homer. Adrian Beltre powered the Rangers to a 4-2 win in Houston, going 2/4 with three runs, a double, and a homer. Other Games: The Rockies topped the Phillies 5-3. The Rays moved into a first place tie with Boston after beating the Orioles 7-4. The Mets beat the Braves 5-3. The Dodgers rallied late to beat the Marlins 6-4. The Nationals held on to beat the Cubs 4-2.  What You Missed: Ryan Dempster gets five meaningless games for hitting A-Rod. Jack Zduriencik gets a silly one year extension in Seattle. The golden era of shortstops was fool's gold. Today's Games: Alex Wood gets the nod for the Braves in Flushing. Felix Doubront takes the hill for the Red Sox in San Francisco. Hisashi Iwakuma starts for the Mariners in Oakland. Gerrit Cole starts for the Pirates in San Diego. Wei-Yin Chen and the Orioles host the Rays. Justin Masterson and the Indians take on the Angels. Cliff Lee and the Phillies host the Rockies. RA Dickey starts for the Blue Jays in the Bronx. Anibal Sanchez and the Tigers host the Twins. Mike Leake and the Reds host the Diamondbacks. Zack Greinke starts for the Dodgers in Miami. Derek Holland and the Rangers host the Astros. National TV: Red Sox-Giants (3:30 PM, MLB Network), Mariners-Athletics (3:30 PM, MLB Network), Rays-Orioles (7 PM, ESPN2) MLB.tv Free Game: Indians-Angels (7 PM) Pitching Matchup of the Day: Zack Greinke vs Nate Eovaldi (Dodgers vs Marlins, 7 PM) Enjoy your day of baseball, everyone.
