Justin Verlander picked up his first win of the season on Monday in his third start, despite pitching well enough to win each of those three starts. On Monday, he refused to turn things over to his bullpen, throwing a complete game against the Royals while allowing seven hits and two runs, walking two and striking out nine. He did it all on 131 pitches, and was hitting 100 mph in the ninth inning (125+ pitches into the game). For the season, he's thrown 25 1/3 innings (out of a max of 27), struck out 23, and walked five. The man is clearly the best pitcher in baseball. Game of the Night: Orioles 10, White Sox 4 (10 innings). The Baltimore Orioles are at the top of the AL East after ten games, and it isn't a sick joke. Baltimore scored nine runs in the final three innings to gain a stunning comeback win over the White Sox, who only had allowed six hits and one run to Balitmore over seven innings. Then, Matt Wieters homered in the eighth. 4-2. In the ninth, Nolan Reimold ho...

How long can Justin Verlander keep this up?

The question in the article header isn’t meant to forecast that an injury or slump is waiting around the corner for the incomparable Detroit Tigers flamethrower. Far from it. What I’m asking here is: how long can the specimen that is Justin Verlander keep going? I found it fairly amusing last night that Twitter was blowing up and commentators Rod Allen and Mario Impemba just...

Tigers are now 7-3, and have increased their Central lead to 1 1/2 games, thanks to a dramatic 9th inning performance by Justin Verlander.  (link via stephen). Verlander looked headed for an oh-no-not-again outing, with 8 great innings and a shaky 9th, until he put away Alex Gordon in dramatic fashion.  In fact, after Leyland visited the mound and left JV in, he told the ace “you’re...

Tigers P Fister cuts short bullpen session

Detroit Tigers righthander Doug Fister cut short a bullpen session after feeling discomfort in his abdomen. Fister went on the disabled list April 8 after suffering a strain in his left side during his first start against Boston. The 28-year-old Fister was acquired by the Tigers from Seattle midway through last week and went 8-1 with a 1.79 ERA in 10 starts. In his fifth major...

Game 2012.12: Tigers at Royals

The Tigers are now 8-3, 2 games up on Cleveland (Cleveland?) in the AL Central.  The Tigers are also still undefeated in night games, and Ryan Raburn and Miguel Cabrera both have 1-game hitting streaks. Drew Smyly was again effective, and it was needed–Royals starter Bruce Chen once again shut down the Tiger hitters. The only run Smyly gave up was in the 3rd, when he joined Adam...

Justin Verlander has pitched well in each of his first two starts, though he doesn't have a win to show for those efforts. He hasn't had much trouble earning victories against the Kansas City Royals. Verlander looks to continue his mastery of the Royals when the Detroit Tigers visit Kauffman Stadium in the opener of a three-game series Monday night. The reigning AL Cy...

Turner Missing in Action; What’s the Deal?

After being sidelined early in spring training with tendonitis in his shoulder, Jacob Turner was expected to be sidelined a week or so before returning to action. That week has slowly turned into a month, as Turner has yet to return to the mound in game action. Could his disappearing act be the sign of a larger problem?
