The Baltimore Orioles are in the middle of a remarkable season and they have already shocked all of baseball by calling up one of their top prospects, shortstop Manny Machado. Now they’re ready to do it again.

The team’s top prospect, 19-year-old Dylan Bundy, is reportedly headed to the big leagues. After Baltimore played an 18-inning game in Seattle on Tuesday, Bundy is being called up to help the team’s pitching staff.

Bundy was the fourth overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft behind college pitchers Gerrit Cole, Danny Hultzen and Trevor Bauer. That made him the top high school player taken, and with good reason. During his senior season the Oklahoma prep star posted a 0.25 ERA and 158 strikeouts in just 71 innings. He was virtually every publication’s High School Player of the Year.

He made his professional debut in April of this year and in 30 innings with Single-A Delmarva he had an ERA of 0.00 with 40 strikeouts in 30 innings. Opposing hitters went just 5-for-94 against him. It’s safe to say he was a bit beyond the competition at that level.

Bundy was then promoted to high Class A ball with the Frederick Keys in May. There he posted a 6-3 record with a 2.84 ERA and earned an invitation to the 2012 Futures Game.

He was then promoted to Double-A Bowie, where he finished with a 2-0 record and a 3.24 ERA.

Bundy has been outstanding at every level, using a fastball that sits in the 94 to 96 mph range, and touches 100. He also flashes a cutter in the 88 to 94 mph range, with a stellar curveball that can sit anywhere 75 to 82 mph. He is also working on a change-up.

The Orioles are going all-in this year to reach the postseason. That includes bringing up Bundy and the 20-year-old Machado. If that’s what it takes to make the playoffs then both of these moves are completely worth it.
