Found January 30, 2014 on The Flagrant Fan:
The Pittsburgh Pirates have been a bit like the Statue of Liberty when it comes to broken pitchers: "Give me your tired, your poor..." They took a seemingly broken A.J. Burnett and received two productive years from him. They took a seemingly broken Francisco Liriano and he had a fantastic year for them last year and even won a playoff game. Now, the expectation is that their next tired and poor pitcher to reclaim is Edinson Volquez. It's not going to happen.I have to admit that I am biased against the guy. So let's put that up there right at the start. He has been the worst starting pitcher in baseball over the past three seasons. He gave up the most earned runs allowed in his league in 2013 and the most walks in 2012. But people still look at him as a "stuff" guy that just needs to figure it out.The past is littered with such guys. Stuff doesn't always get you a good pitcher. Let's put some things in perspective here. Edinson Volquez has made 15...

Burnett to pitch…but where?

The A.J. Burnett saga continues, but now we have some actual news to digest: A.J. Burnett will return to pitch in ’14, per source. Burnett will be open to pitching for a club other than the Pirates — Travis Sawchik (@Sawchik_Trib) January 28, 2014 As you will recall (or surely have been reminded by now), Burnett previously stated he was either returning to the Pirates retiring...

Did A.J. Burnett Just Stick It To The Pittsburgh Pirates?

After months of silence, free-agent A.J. Burnett, the leader of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ rotation for the past two seasons and one of the most effective starting pitchers in baseball over that time, says he will put off retirement and be back to pitch in 2014. As an unnamed source told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, “He’s made the decision he is going to play.” If so, Burnett...

Pittsburgh Pirates: The future of Neil Walker

Neil Walker is congratulated by manager Clint Hurdle (Photo Courtesy of Al Behrman- AP) Neil Walker signed a one-year $5.75 million deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates last week, which is a raise from the $3.3 million salary he made last season. With that in mind, is Walker’s value becoming too high for the Pirates? Should Pittsburgh try and lock Walker up with a long-term deal? After...

Pirates rumors: A.J. Burnett will return but may test free agency

As happens with rumors, they often change. This one here appears that it has. For some time now, we have heard many rumors that say pitcher A.J. Burnett would retire at age 37. However, Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported Tuesday afternoon that Burnett will most likely pitch again in 2014 -- but not necessarily with the Pirates.A.J. Burnett will return to pitch...

What is A.J. Burnett Worth to the Pittsburgh Pirates?

Once A.J. Burnett stated that he will be putting off retirement for at least another year, he became the best available pitcher on the free agent market. Typing that sentence seems a little odd considering that it was only two years ago that the New York Yankees paid the Pittsburgh Pirates to take Burnett off their hands. In December of 2008, Burnett signed a five year, $82...

Player Profile #101: Gerrit Cole | SP | PIT

In his first two years in the minors, Gerrit Cole was a dominant strikeout pitcher. He played at four levels in 2011 and 2012, and he fanned a batter per inning at all of them. Then 2013 rolled around and Cole’s Ks disappeared. In 12 starts at AAA to begin last year, Cole struck out just 6.22 batters per nine, and his 17.5 K% was far below the 25%+ rate we’d come to expect. The...

A.J. Burnett: New and Best Option

I wrote a little bit about A.J. Burnett late last week. The article is here, and it’s about the significance to the Pittsburgh Pirates of Burnett deciding to either retire or return to Pittsburgh for another go. I figured it would be a hugely significant decision either way, and I wrote it like that because […]

If Pirates won't pay, where will A.J. Burnett go?

A.J. Burnett has decided he'd like to pitch in 2014, after all. Maybe he saw the four-year, $50 million Matt Garza received from the Brewers and thought he'd like some of that. Perhaps Burnett and his agent saw a free agent market for starting pitchers that currently has no clear top choice and figured he'd get a nice contract out of that. It's possible that the...

Keith Law has seven Pirates in his Top 100 prospects

We're in Top 100 prospects week, and today's the day for Keith Law's list. He's got seven Pirate prospects on the list: Gregory Polanco (13), Tyler Glasnow (20), Jameson Taillon (27), Austin Meadows (35), Nick Kingham (73), Alen Hanson (74), and Josh Bell (98). You can read more about it at Pirates Prospects, since Tim has an ESPN insider account and I do not.  ...

Burnett plans to pitch in 2014

At one point, A.J. Burnett declared he was either going to retire after the 2013 season or pitch again for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2014.

Orioles badly need A.J. Burnett

The Orioles must sign A.J. Burnett. After a horrible winter, signing of Burnett would show the increasingly cranky fan base that the team will do something meaningful to answer their complaints. Tuesday’s news that Burnett had decided, barely two weeks before spring training opened, that he wanted to pitch this year and would hit the open market, qualifies as good news. The...

There's plenty of interest in AJ Burnett

Peter Gammons is reporting today that the Orioles are very interested in AJ Burnett and that the Rays have some interest in him as well. I won't pretend to know what's on Burnett's mind, but at this point it seems pretty unlikely to me that the Pirates will get into a bidding war for Burnett's services. The Pirates offer Burnett a locatino closer to his Maryland home...

A.J. Burnett Makes Sense For The Dodgers, But He Probably Won’t Play For Them

(via) Now that Masahiro Tanaka has signed, the free agent starting pitcher market is finally starting to move. Matt Garza signed with the Brewers this weekend, and rumors are starting to pick up around Ervin Santana and Ubaldo Jimenez. However, all has been quiet in the world of A.J. Burnett. The speculation has been that Burnett would either return to the Pirates or retire. That...

Phillies rumored to have interest in A.J. Burnett

Earlier this week, word spread that right-handed pitcher A.J. Burnett wanted to pitch again this season after rumors of possible retirement.  Earlier this winter the Philadelphia Phillies looked into Burnett when he was still undecided whether he wanted to pitch this season.  The Phillies are in need of starting pitching depth and reports are that Burnett wants to stay close to...

Please RAJ.... Consider A.J.

I'll be the first guy to tell you that I'm not a huge A.J. Burnett fan. Some of it is general 2009 anger (how the hell did our line-up not beat him in Game 2?), and some of it is the general thought that A.J. Burnett annoyed me when he...
