In a pregame session with the media, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo told reporters, including the Arizona Republic’s Theo Mackie, that left-handed starter Eduardo Rodríguez began his throwing program. That’s encouraging news regarding the status of Rodríguez, who’s been out since March 19 with a left shoulder strain.
Eduardo Rodriguez began his throwing program today, Torey Lovullo said.
Still no update on the path forward for Alek Thomas. He’s getting more opinions on his most recent MRI results.

Originally placed on the 15-day injured list, the Diamondbacks did not do imaging on Rodríguez’s injured shoulder before starting a throwing program on March 28. Two weeks later, he reported soreness while ramping up and was shut down. He was transferred to the 60-day IL not too long after, with another four weeks before he’d start throwing again. The team got a positive update from his latest imaging, showing that the shoulder was healing.
With Rodríguez set to begin his throwing program, there is now a timetable for the left-hander to return to the rotation. He is first eligible to come off the injured list on May 25th, although the team will have to make a corresponding 40-man roster move when that happens.
The Diamondbacks signed Eduardo Rodríguez to a four-year deal in December, with the intent for him to stabilize the middle of the rotation. While that hasn’t happened, the team signed Jordan Montgomery to fill that gap. Additionally, they’ve gotten quality performances out of youngsters Slade Cecconi and Brandon Pfaadt, as the rotation has held up well through the first six weeks of the season.
