You see, Janssen is having a very, very, very bad season. After Saturday evening’s game vs. the White Sox, Casey lowered his dreadful ERA from 6.55 to to 5.84 after pitching 1.1 innings. But if you saw the game you would immediately ask yourself “How is that possible?!?! He walked 2 guys with the bases loaded!!!” That’s the thing about relievers – their numbers can be deceiving and ERA is not a reliable metric when evaluating a relief pitcher’s performance.
What is the mark of an effective relief pitcher? One who gets his team out of jams. Not just holding a team’s lead, but making sure that the runners that he has inherited don’t reach home plate.
