Chicago Cubs president Theo Epstein met briefly with reporters on the field before Wednesday night's 5-1 victory over the Miami Marlins. Rain halted play in the top of the eighth inning, and umpires called the game after 1 hour and 17 minutes.

Although the Cubs are rumored to be listening to offers for top starting pitchers Ryan Dempster and Matt Garza, Epstein termed the trade market as a whole slow-moving and said the Cubs won't do a deal just to do a deal.

It's a good bet, though, that at least one of the top two starters will be moved. If and when that happens, the Cubs will still have to put a team on the field and also try to compete next year.

"Hopefully we're very competitive very soon," Epstein said. "Just sitting here and wanting to be so doesn't make it so. You have to build an organization. You get sick of me saying this, but there are no shortcuts."

The Cubs would like to get pitching prospects in return in any trades they make, said Epstein. The organization is severely lacking in pitching at the minor league levels, which is one reason the Cubs went heavily after pitching in the June draft.

"We need to have a lot of pitching in the system," Epstein said. "It's not enough to have a handful. You need that waves and waves of pitching coming through your system, and we don't have that. We hardly have even one wave. We need to build a lot of pitching depth."
