Eric Hosmer is still a free agent, but he’s not ready to settle.

Per Jon Morosi, the former Royals first baseman has set his sights on an eight-year contract.

Eric Hosmer’s camp has continued pushing for a contract of more than 7 years, source says. [He is a young free agent at age 28.] The Royals need to re-sign him (and capacity to pay him) increased with this week’s Brandon Moss trade.

But the Royals are in no position to win now. They went for broke (and accomplished it) by appearing in consecutive World Series, winning one. However, 3-5 years from now? The Royals could very well be in position to contend again. But is saddling themselves with a seven-year contract the smartest play? Possibly not.

Hosmer is good, but not great. That said, last season he would slash .318/.385/.498 with 31 doubles and 25 home runs. He’s essentially alternated between good and bad seasons ever since coming into the league in 2011. But the Royals need a first baseman. After trading Brandon Moss, nobody currently in their organization has any experience at first base.

But don’t expect Hosmer to come down on his contract demands just yet. After all, Scott Boras is his agent. But more than that, somebody is going to pay him. Even if it takes a little while longer.
