The Pirates have a brand new starting pitcher, and he's one of the best we've had in a good while. I wrote all about Bedard the other day here. Let's take a closer look at the pitches he throws. Here's the data for the five pitches he threw in 2011 with their average speed, horizontal break, vertical break, the percentage of times he threw them, and the percentage of times he threw them for a strike. The data is courtesy of TexasLeaguers.com. Pitch TypeVelocH-BreakV-BreakSelectionStrike%Curveball77.3-5.06-9.5530.8%66.5%4-Seam90.44.968.7029.5%63.6%2-Seam91.09.416.6927.7%62.5%Change78.26.233.228.7%58.8%Cutter89.63.378.123.2%66.7%You can see that Bedard loves to throw the Uncle Charlie. You won't find too many pitchers that throw their curveball more than any other pitch, but Bedard has done it his entire career. The vertical drop on the pitch is right with some of the best curveballs in the league. Clayton Kershaw, this year's NL Cy Young award winner has one ...

Pirates sign Erik Bedard to 1-year deal

The Pirates finally seem to be getting in the swing of things as they inked LHP Erik Bedard to a 1-year contract worth $4.5 million. It is a relatively low risk, high reward situation in that IF Bedard can stay healthy (and that is a big if), he has shown he is still very capable of pitching at a high level. Bedard started 24 games last year as he hit the 20 game mark for the first...

Report: Pirates Sign SP Erik Bedard

According to a tweet from Marc Brassard at La Droit and confirmed by MLB Trade Rumors, left-handed pitcher Erik Bedard will sign with the Pittsburgh Pirates at some point today. Brassard says the deal will be for one year and worth $4.5 million plus incentives. As I wrote last night when news of the Pirates’ interest broke, Bedard is a great addition to the Pirates’...

Bedard's Bonuses

I was reading Jennifer Langosch's post today about Erik Bedard's incentives in his contract and I couldn't help but laugh. Apparently Bedard gets an extra $100,000 if he wins the World Series MVP award. He gets an additional $25,000 for winning the MVP award of either of the playoff series before the World Series.I understand you never want to show complete distrust in...

Pittsburgh Pirates Sign Erik Bedard, Who Starts The Other 75% Of The Year?

The Pirates have come to terms with free agent starting pitcher Erik Bedard on a one year deal. The deal is worth $4.5 million. It's a low-risk high upside type deal for the Pirates and I do commend them for it.If Bedard is healthy, he can be a top of the rotation type of guy for a Bucco rotation that is lacking top end talent. The problem for Bedard is he rarely makes it...

Erik Bedard to Sign With Pirates Today?

The Pittsburgh Pirates may be close to a deal with free agent left hander Erik Bedard, according to Marc Brassard (h/t to Blitzburgh Blog for the find). The report is written in French, as is an article translated from a news site in Canada.  The translation is a bit rough, but both seem to say that Bedard will sign for $4.5 M plus incentives, and that a deal could be reached today...

Pirates sign oft-injured left-hander Bedard

Erik Bedard could easily become the ace of the Pirates' starting pitching rotation next season, but he didn't make it sound that way after signing a one-year, $4.5-million contract.

David Ortiz Returns, Erik Bedard to the Pirates

The winter meeting are in full swing and the Boston Red Sox are starting to make some moves to solidify the roster for the upcoming season. Rumors have GM Ben Cherington talking about with the Oakland A’s concerning reliever Andrew Bailey, kicking things around with the Rangers, and checking on White Sox starters John Danks and Gavin Floyd. Over the next week, we will hear a vast...

Pirates sign Erik Bedard

The Pirates made another move this afternoon, signing left-handed starter Erik Bedard to a 1-year, $4.5 million deal. I don’t have a lot of time for a long post, but I am a big fan of this pickup. Bedard is a very good pitcher – possibly the best on the current staff – when healthy. The problem is that he’s ridiculously injury-prone. Still, it’s a very...

Pirates To Sign Erik Bedard

The Pirates have agreed to sign lefty Erik Bedard, MLBTR has confirmed.  Canadian journalist Marc Brassard first tweeted news of an impending $4.5MM deal. Bedard, 32, is coming off his healthiest season since 2007.  This year for the Mariners and Red Sox he posted a 3.62 ERA, 8.7 K/9, 3.3 BB/9, 0.97 HR/9, and 42% groundball rate in 129 1/3 innings.  He missed time with knee...

Bedard headed to Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Pirates and left-hander Erik Bedard have come to terms on a one-year contract. The deal is believed to be worth $4.5 million and is pending a physical, which in Bedard's case isn't exactly a slam dunk.

Pirates make $4.5 million deal with left-hander Bedard

DALLAS -- The Pirates and free agent left-hander Erik Bedard agreed to a one-year, $4.5 million contract Wednesday, according to an industry source.

Erik Bedard Official, Jason Jaramillo DFAd

The Pittsburgh Pirates have made the Erik Bedard signing official, per a team press release. To make room on the 40-man roster, Jason Jaramillo has been designated for assignment. More updates to come.

Pittsburgh Pirates: Huntington’s Bushel Basket Approach Continues

(Follow me on Twitter @jim_krug) Image credit zimbio In a vacuum, I like the Pittsburgh Pirates’ free agent addition of SP Erik Bedard a lot.  Despite his age (33) and injury history, Bedard instantly becomes the only pitcher in the rotation capable of striking out nearly a batter an inning- a vital barometer for consistent MLB success. Outside of the vacuum, I believe the...

Erik Bedard goes to Pirates for one year, $4.5 million

Still waiting on the Prince Fielder front. For now, the Marlins appear to have lost out to the Cardinals on Albert Pujols, but just signed free agent starter Mark Buehrle for four years, $58 million, so it remains to be seen whether the Fish want to jump in on Fielder as well. The video above was shot live during Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen's meeting with reporters this...
