Final: Cardinals 10, Pirates 7 WP: Adam Wainwright (1-3, 6.75 ERA) LP: Charlie Morton (1-2, 4.22 ERA) SV: Jason Motte (4, 3.12 ERA) The Bats were working today, but the gloves were not. The Pirates committed a season-tying high four errors and gave up three home runs to fall to the Cardinals 10-7. Charlie Morton started and ended up giving up six runs (five earned) over 4 1/3 innings. St. Louis would add four more runs off relievers Jared Hughes and Tony Watson, only one of which was earned. Jose Tabata and Pedro Alvarez both hit 2-run home runs for the Bucs. Garrett Jones added a 2-run single and Alvarez would knock in another run with a single in the 8th inning. After not scoring over five runs in any game this season, the Pirates accomplished that feat for the second straight game. They have scored 16 runs in the past two games. It took them nine games to accomplish that run total to start the year. Brad Lincoln pitched a 1-2-3 8th inning of relief. Clint Hurdle has said that Lin...

Wainwright earns first win since 2010

The St. Louis Cardinals had not scored any runs in April for right-hander Adam Wainwright in his first 19 2/3 innings over four starts. Not surprisingly, Wainwright, who had not pitched all that well in a couple of those games, was 0-3. But with the advent of May, the Cardinals' offense was in full bloom Tuesday. A three-run homer by third baseman David Freese, a two-run drive...

Can the offense keep going?

After last night's offensive outburst, the New Lumber Company moves on to St. Louis to take on Adam Wainwright. Wainwright got off to an awful start this year in his return from Tommy John surgery, but he was pretty excellent in his last start against the Cubs. The Bucs will counter with Charlie Morton, who's already seen the Cardinals once this year. The Cardinals mostly...

How bueno is Waino 2.0?

Last night, May 1st, Adam Wainwright got his first victory of the year against the Pittsburgh Pirates, as the Cardinals bats lashed out for 10 runs and 13 hits. The Pirates and their inept defense can always be counted on as a cure for any offensive slump! But more important to the long-term outlook of St. Louis season, is the progress made by Wainwright in his recovery from Tommy...

MLB Insiders: St. Louis Cardinals

The Pirates open a three-game series in St. Louis on Tuesday night. Right-hander Charlie Morton will pitch for the Bucs. The Cardinals counter with right-hander Adam Wainwright.

Cardinals still pulling for former teammate

ST. LOUIS Off to the worst start of his career and searching for answers, Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright turned to a friend and former teammate going through similar struggles: Albert Pujols. The two have remained close since Pujols signed a 10-year, 240 million deal with the Angels over the winter. With both in unfamiliar territory following extended rough patches, they'...

Bats stay hot, but…

Tuesday night’s game was very different from the first 22 the Pirates played in April. It featured plenty of offense along with poor pitching and defense. While it was nice to see the Pirate bats stay hot, the final result wasn’t what they were looking for. For the first time all season, really, the Pirates’ pitching did them in. Charlie Morton didn’t look bad initially...

Wainwright wins 1st, Cardinals beat Pirates

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Adam Wainwright worked seven solid innings for his first win since September 2010, and the St. Louis Cardinals got big nights at the plate from David Freese and Matt Holliday to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-7 on Tuesday. Freese's sixth home run and third in five games was a tiebreaking, three-run shot off Charlie Morton (1-2) in the fifth. Holliday homered...

Pirates-Cardinals Preview

(AP) -- The St. Louis Cardinals' Adam Wainwright enjoyed his best outing of the season last week, but that wasn't enough to give him his first win since returning from Tommy John surgery. The right-hander will get another chance Tuesday night when the Cardinals continue their lengthy stretch against NL Central foes in the opener a three-game series with the visiting Pittsburgh...

Game 23: Cardinals 10 Pirates 7

After the defense and pitching spent the first eighth of the season bailing the Pirates' offense out after awful performance after awful performance, things went in the opposite direction in this one. Charlie Morton was not particularly sharp, nor was Jared Hughes (who was recalled to take Evan Meek's place) or Tony Watson. The four errors committed behind them did not help...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. St. Louis Cardinals – Game 24

That was not enjoyable.  The good news is that the Pirates still kept the bats going.  The bad news is the pitching fell apart.  Charlie Morton.  Not good.  Jared Hughes.  Not good.  Tony Watson.  Not good.  Brad Lincoln.  Good. You aren’t going to win too many games in which you give up nine runs.  You [...]
