Ex-Red Sox Homegrown Hurler Claimed By Rockies To Bolster Pitching Depth

A former Boston Red Sox hurler will attempt to get his career back on track with the Colorado Rockies.

The southpaw has shown the ability to be an above-average pitcher but struggled in 2023.

The Colorado Rockies claimed left-handed pitcher Jalen Beeks off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays according to the Major League Baseball transaction log.

Beeks was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 12th round of the 2014 Major League Draft and made his big-league debut with the organization during the Red Sox's 2018 World Series Championship run. Shortly after appearing in the majors, he was a part of a monumental trade for Boston.

Beeks was dealt to the Rays in exchange for Nathan Eovaldi at the 2018 trade deadline. The southpaw went on to post a 4.18 ERA (99 ERA+) with a 269-to-107 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .251 batting average against and a 1.38 WHIP in 271 1/3 innings across 129 games with the Rays.

The 30-year-old's best season came in 2022 when he posted a 2.80 ERA across 61 innings of work. His latest season, however, did not go as well. He is coming off a 5.95 ERA in 42 1/3 innings.

Now the southpaw will have a chance to prove himself in Colorado and there's a good chance he'll return to form. It would have been worth a flyer for the Red Sox to claim him but alas.
