Fan injured after being struck by hot dog shot by Phillie Phanatic

A Philadelphia Phillies fan has suffered one of the strangest injuries in recent memory. In Monday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Kathy McVay was hit in the face by a hot dog fired by the Phillie Phanatic.

In between innings, the mascot shot hot dogs into the crowd. One was fired in the direction of McVay, who explained what happened next.

“And then the next thing I know he shot it in our direction, and bam! It hit me like a ton of bricks. My glasses flew,” McVay said, per Sarah Bloomquist of ABC affiliate WPVI-TV in Philadelphia. “I have a small hematoma in my eye. And mostly, it’s going to get worse before it gets better. It’s going to go down the side of my face.”

Because of a previous shoulder injury, McVay wasn’t in position to block or deflect the flying hot dog.

Despite her injury, McVay has managed to keep a good sense of humor about it. Not only that, but she’s okay if the rarity of what happened causes people to laugh.

“It gives people a good laugh, and if that makes somebody chuckle, then that’s fine,” she said, per Bloomquist.

The Phillies have reached out and offered tickets to a later game. Hopefully her injuries heal and she’s back at Citizens Bank Park in short order. In the mean time, hopefully the hot dogs will be shot with more of an arc in the near future.
