Twins-span-doubles-against
FanGraphs ranked what they believed were the ten best deals of the offseason. Taking the top spot at No. 1 was the Washington Nationals who acquired Denard Span from Minnesota for what they say was one A-Ball pitching prospect who may or may not be able to stick in the rotation long term. Ranked at No. 5 was this deal: The Mets acquire Travis d’Arnaud, Noah Syndergaard, John Buck, and Wuilmer Becerra from Toronto. As I said above, I like this deal for Toronto, and I think there was a case to be made for the Mets keeping Dickey signing him to an extension themselves. But, in D’Arnaud and Syndergaard, they were able to get a couple of pieces in return that could have much more long term value to the Mets, and D’Arnaud is close enough to the Majors that they could start seeing a return on the move this season. Because Dickey was willing to take a discount on an extension, the Mets were able to pry a premium return from Toronto, and having these two guys around is probably better for th...

Mets Catcher John Buck says Johan was tipping his pitches

When pitchers and catchers officially report next week, new Mets Catcher John Buck will have a conversation with Johan Santana in an effort to help the left-hander. Buck’s Marlins picked up on Santana tipping his pitches last year, and now Buck wants to relay the information to Santana in an effort to correct the problem. The veteran catcher will be there for his pitchers in...

Mets sign outfielders Patterson and Wilson to Minor league Deals

The New York Mets have signed outfielders Corey Patterson and Mike Wilson to minor league contracts. Both players were last in the major leagues in 2011, and the Mets said Wednesday they will report to minor league camp. The 33-year-old Patterson hit .252 with 118 homers and 431 RBIs in a 12-year big league career for seven teams. Last season he played 117 games for Milwaukee...

Backup backstop battle: Anthony Recker v. Landon Powell

As an overabundance of Michael Bourn rumors float around in the minds of Mets fans everywhere, the team will see pitchers and catchers report to spring training in less than a week. Pending any new additions, the Mets have spots on the opening day roster available, which should create healthy competition between players for the open jobs. Which spots are up for grabs? Who is most...

2013 Mets Draft report: A story of mock drafts

There are a number of sites that review mock drafts before the season gets underway and they will continue to mock draft until the real draft happens.  I’ve taken it upon myself to look at some of the selections and review them before I submit the player that I currently project as the Mets’ First Rounder. Jonathon Crawford: RHP – (My MLB Draft, Minor League Ball) The Junior...

John Buck: More Throwback Than Throw-In

When the Mets sent R.A. Dickey to Toronto earlier this offseason (along with Josh Thole and Mike Nickeas), they received two of the Blue Jays’ top prospects in Travis d’Arnaud and Noah Syndergaard.  Toronto also threw in veteran catcher John Buck to complete the deal.  Buck is expected to begin the season as the Mets’ No. 1 catcher, eventually deferring to d’Arnaud when...

Mets Rename Their Spring Home Tradition Field

Adam Rubin reports that the Mets’ stadium in St. Lucie, formerly known as Digital Domain Park, is reverting back to Tradition Field. Tradition, Florida is again the sponsor, but no details on the naming rights deal yet. The Mets ballpark held the name Tradition Field from 2004-09. During the regular season, the St. Lucie Mets play their home games at Tradition Field.

From Left Field: Francisco Thinks He’s The Closer, But Let’s See Him Prove It

Frank Francisco told the New York Post yesterday that he is the Mets’ closer. Sure, he might have been signed last offseason to be the Mets’ closer, but it’s not like he went out last year and was stellar on the mound. In fact, his numbers (5.53 ERA and 23 saves) were pretty poor for a closer. So while he “thinks” he is this team’s closer, nothing is set in stone. The...

The quest for civil, intelligent and passionate comments

This article will have zero Mets content. But at the same time, it seems critical to the future of the site and worthy of being posted. Up until this point, the main worry in regards to the blog has been building an audience. Now that has been sort of accomplished, my concern is how to keep quality high. That’s quality on our end and quality on your end, too. Writing can be a very...

Would You Accept A Mets Player That Was Gay?

There is nothing wrong, weird, or any other negative adjective you can think of, with being a homosexual. It is a lifestyle that over the past twenty years has become more accepted in society, and yet still has roadblocks to it being fully accepted. After the Super Bowl week, where 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver talked about how a gay teammate would not be welcomed in the locker...

Rebuilding the Mets, A Historical Perspective

In 1980, Baseball in New York featured a Yankee team that was a legitimate contender. Having won it all in 1978, they looked pretty solid. The overbearing and uncompromising Yankee owner George Steinbrenner was determined to establish his Yankees as perennial contenders by sheer force of will. The Mets on the other hand were awful and ended up losing 95 games. It’s almost hard...

This Week’s Featured Post: The Clock Has Started Ticking On The Sandy Experiment

Pundits often say a college football coach deserves at least two years to turn a team over before anyone can honestly pass judgement.  That time provides the new coach with enough time to recruit his own players and implement his own scheme.  General managers in Major League Baseball get no such grace period.  Thus the dilemma Sandy Alderson currently finds himself in. Since taking...
