Neftali Feliz turns 24 on Wednesday.

He is still a young starting pitcher, prone to the problems that young starting pitchers encounter, and on his last day as a 23-year-old, Feliz encountered a problem he simply couldn't fix. Feliz lost command of his delivery in the third inning of the Texas Rangers' eventual 8-7 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Feliz knew what he was doing: He wasn't keeping his front shoulder close to his body and thus was bringing his body toward the plate too far ahead of his arm. The result: fastballs up in the zone, when they were in the zone at all.

Over the final three innings plus two batters that he worked Tuesday, Feliz walked six batters. He walked four of them on four pitches each. He threw more balls (31) than strikes (29). And he made the first pair of walks he allowed sting by giving up a pair of two-out home runs in the same inning to turn a 5-0 lead into a 5-4 lead.

"I lost my control a little bit and had a hard time trying to regain it," Feliz said through an interpreter. "It's something I have to work on."

Feliz said he was aware of the problem. He just was powerless to fix it. Derek Holland, who is 25, encountered some similar issues recently in a pair of rough outings.

"When it happens, the key is to figure it out and fix it," Feliz said. "It's a key to my control. Sometimes it happens and you feel good and you fix it. Sometimes you feel good and it doesn't get fixed. I knew what I was doing; I just couldn't get it back together."
