On Monday, Jose Fernandez was named the 2013 National League Rookie of the Year by the Baseball Writers Association of America to finish off what was a historic rookie year for the 21 year old Marlin.   Long rumored to be the front-runner for the award, the writers made it official on Monday when they decided to give the award to Fernandez over other highly touted rookies such as Yasiel Puig of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Fernandez who is set to start on Opening Day for the Marlins went 12-6 with a 2.19 ERA while striking out 187 and only walking 58.  Not only was Fernandez the best rookie pitcher in the league but he was one of the best pitchers overall in Major League Baseball.   The fact is he also a finalist for the NL Cy Young further shows that.  While the right-hander is not expected to take home that hardware, the mere consideration shows how much talent Miami has starting every fifth day for them.   A Cy Young is not out of the question in future seasons including the upcoming 2014 campaign. In all Fernandez finished with XXX votes, XXX of which were first place votes to give him the edge of over runner-up Puig.   The Dodger grabbed headlines and filled up boxscores but he didn’t play a full season and struggled down the stretch which may have ultimately cost him the award.   Fernandez on the other hand was shut down for most of September which may have helped him secure the award.   Initial speculation was that lost month cost cost the young phenom the recognition which was an outside possibility. In addition to this official award, Fernandez also was named Rookie of the Year earlier this off-season in the Players Choice Awards and by the Sporting News.
