Tampa Bay Rays’ Fernando Rodney has been in the same conversation as teammate David Price for the American League Cy Young Award. But on Friday, the closer was given a different award. Correction, two awards.
Major League Baseball named Fernando Rodney as the American League Comeback Player of the Year as well as the Delivery Man of the Year. Both awards are voted on by 30 MLB.com writers.
Fernando Rodney was one of the best overall closers in baseball in 2012. He saved 48 games for the Rays out of a possible 50 chances. Rodney’s best saves in a season prior to 2012 was 37 when he was a member of the Detroit Tigers in 2009.
He also finished the season with a 0.60 ERA, which beats out Dennis Eckersley (0.61) for best in MLB history.
Fernando Rodney may not be done accepting awards. He will still be considered for the AL Cy Young but the likelihood of him receiving that one is slim as several expect David Price to run away with that honor.
