DETROIT Home runs can be magic, and this one certainly was.
Prince Fielder hit a majestic, 460-foot solo shot off the brick wall well beyond the scoreboard in right-center field Friday night. The third-inning blast was foreshadowed by Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona while speaking to reporters before the game.
And the ball from the prodigious swat -- the sixth-longest in 14 seasons at Comerica Park -- became the possession of a 4-year-old boy from Monroe who couldnt stop smiling.
Francona, a coach for Tigers manager Buddy Bell in 1996, used to throw batting practice to the son of the teams two-time league homer champion, Cecil Fielder.
"I remember he didn't pick up the balls," said Francona, who smiled while recalling young Prince. "I told him, 'No matter how far you hit them, you have to pick up the balls.' We had a good laugh about that last spring (when Francona was working for ESPN).
"I remember thinking, no 12-year-old should be a...

DETROIT (AP) -- Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera each hit a long home run, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Indians 10-4 on Friday night.
The Tigers scored three runs in the second and three more in the fourth. Fielder's third-inning solo shot landed just below the No. 42 honoring Jackie Robinson on the brick facade beyond the wall in right-center field, giving Detroit...
Ouch. No hitter ever wants to get beaned on any part of their body by a pitch travelling upwards of 80 mph, especially in the region where the family jewels are located.
During a baseball game Saturday night between the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians, slugger Prince Fielder’s jewels were put in harms way when he got hit in that area by a Joe Smith 81 mph breaking ball...
20-14, 1st place, 1.5 games up on Royals/Indians.
Get Al Alburquerque out of Detroit. At least for a while. Please. This has gone on long enough. Game 34 was Tigers 6, Indians 4, Tigers Bullpen -3.* The bullpen pooped the bed yet again. What is that – 10 times this season already? Take away the walk-offs – it happens – and it’s still 7 times. (I think. I’ll check...

Miguel Cabrera is a few homers off the league-leading pace in the American League, but there is not a hitter in baseball damaging opposing pitchers like the Detroit Tigers’ third baseman has so far this season.
Cabrera bombed a three-run homer in the fourth inning Friday against the Cleveland Indians, his seventh long ball of the year to...
DETROIT -- Yes, Tigers fans, that was really Justin Verlander on the mound Saturday night.
He may have looked like Jamie Moyer or late-career Frank Tanana, but it was the Tigers ace trying to survive a game without his legendary fastball. It didn't go well.
Verlander did strike out seven batters in his five innings mostly with his changeup and curveball but the lack of a...
DETROIT -- After quite a few good games, the Indians simply didnt have it Friday night in the series opener against the Tigers.Or at least starting pitcher Corey Kluber didnt. And when the starting pitcher doesnt have it, it makes it tough -- especially against a lineup as relentless and formidable as Detroits. The Tigers provide no breathers, and they took advantage of Klubers struggles...
DETROIT (AP) -- Ubaldo Jimenez outpitched Justin Verlander, and Cleveland's Chris Perez got Miguel Cabrera to hit a game-ending groundout with two on to preserve the Indians' 7-6 win over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night. Verlander (4-3) was erratic early, allowing three runs in the first two innings. He settled a bit after that, but the Indians took a 6-1 lead before...
All offseason long, Tribe fans heard about that team up north.
Last year the Detroit Tigers were not only the reigning American League Central Division Champions, but won the AL Pennant for the second time in the last seven years. Although they were swept by the San Francisco Giants in the World Series, Detroit has continued to be one of the best teams in the league, averaging 92...
Having won 10 of 11 and fresh off a four game sweep of Oakland, the Tribe headed north to the Motor City looking to stay hot for a weekend series against the AL Central leading Tigers. The Tigers however wanted no part of succumbing to the Indians’ winning ways and thumped the Tribe 10-4 with Max Scherzer getting the win and Corey Kluber picking up the loss.
The Indians jumped...
