The Rangers took the exciting route last night, picking not just one of the big top ten names from the draft, but two. Supplemental pick Tanner Scheppers and first rounder Matthew Purke were the ninth and tenth highest rated players in the draft by Baseball America. They are the highest ranked pitchers, with respect to their draft, that the Rangers have picked in over a decade. John Danks and Thomas Diamond were both ranked #11 in their respective drafts. Their selections caused Jim Callis and John Manuel, in their open discussion during the draft last night, to consider Texas as one of the winners on the first night. How did Tanner Schepperes fall to Texas? The short answer is that there is lingering concern from his muscular shoulder injury from last spring.
