I’ve talked about Charlie Morton a lot in the last week, arguing that he deserves to be in the starting rotation. There are plenty of anti-Morton Pirates fans who feel that Morton shouldn’t even be on the team. His strong overall numbers are chalked up to being a fluke, and his bad starts are highlighted. In short, if Charlie Morton is doing well this year, it’s just a small sample size, but a smaller sample of one bad start is the real deal. Morton had a rough start last time out, which brought on the anti-Morton fans. Tonight he had a great start. My feelings on Morton are the same after each outing. He’s a very underrated starter, and I feel he could start for most teams around the league. I wanted to test that theory out. I decided to look at every team in the majors this year, looking specifically at the FIP numbers for their individual starting pitchers. This is to give a rough guide of where Morton would rank in each rotation this year. I also added notes for each team, since...

Charlie Morton Grounds Marlins in 4-2 Pirates Victory

Charlie Morton was dropping his sinker and curveball below the Marlins bats in a winning effort. Charlie Morton is the ground ball. The ground ball, Charlie. Morton played grounders for seven innings of Pittsburgh’s 4-2 win over the Miami Marlins. The Pirates starter faced 25 Marlins batters, saw 20 of his pitches put into play and 15 ground balls to produce a quality start. He...

TOP OF THE SYSTEM A look at how the current top 20 prospects did today.  Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. Pirates 4, Marlins 2

Charlie Morton retired his final 11 batters over seven strong innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates maintained the best record in the majors with a 4-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on Wednesday night. Morton (4-3) shook off a shaky beginning in which he allowed six hits over his first three-plus innings to beat Miami for the second time in an 11-day span. Morton, who also had an...

The Debate: Should Jameson Taillon Be a September Callup?

Jameson Taillon has only made one start at the Triple-A level. That start was rough at first, with three earned runs in the first inning before Taillon settled down. He has time to make about five more starts before the end of the Triple-A regular season. Therefore, it’s probably too early to talk about him making the jump to the majors. But that discussion started long before...

Minor League Schedule: Pimentel Looks to Recover From Poor Outing

In Indianapolis tonight, Stolmy Pimentel takes the mound trying to bounce back from a poor start in which he gave up seven earned runs to Louisville. First Pitch: The Bench Has (Almost) Been Fully Upgraded

One of the big areas of need for the Pirates leading up to the deadline was the bench. For a long stretch the Pirates had a weak hitting bench, with Michael McKenry, Brandon Inge, Clint Barmes, and Travis Snider all struggling to hit. The only other hitter on the bench was either Gaby Sanchez, who can’t hit right-handers, or Garrett Jones, who can’t hit left-handers, depending...

Pirates 5, Marlins 4

They did it again. Another win. Another comeback. Another Russell Martin walk-off. The result: a sweep, a 9-2 homestand, the best record in baseball, and a four game lead in the division.  Just incredible. Early in the afternoon, this wasn’t shaping up to be a great day for the Bucs. Andrew McCutchen had been scratched with a sore shoulder, Gerrit Cole wasn’t sharp in the first...

Pirates sweep Marlins with third-straight comeback win

Russell Martin's RBI single down the left-field line scored Josh Harrison in the 10th inning and gave the Pirates a 5-4 walk-off victory against the Marlins this afternoon at PNC Park. It was the ninth walk-off win of the season for the Pirates and their second in the past three games. Harrison scored the game-winning run both times. He led off the inning off Miami reliever...

Game 112: Pirates vs. Marlins Recap

Source: FanGraphs Clever, witty, a cool fact, a question. These are normal things that are used to lead into a blog post or any form of writing for that matter. Well not tonight. I got nothing. The Pittsburgh Pirates have left me speechless. Every time you think that they have won a game in every…

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Colorado Rockies – Game 115

A sweep of the Marlins is just what the doctor ordered.  When combined with the Dodgers taking the series from the Cardinals the Pirates have built themselves up a nice little lead.  No time to step off the gas though the Cardinals play the Cubs, they should have no problem dispatching them with extreme prejudice.…

The mirror series

This Marlins series is strange. The Pirates and Marlins played each other not even two weeks ago, and this second incarnation of the first series is happening with the same exact pitching matchups that we saw over the weekend in Miami ten-odd days ago. Tonight, Tom Koehler and Charlie Morton match up after giving us the only poorly pitched game in Pirates-Marlins Round 1. The Pirates...
