The Colorado Rockies are limping toward the finish.

A 7-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday was Colorado's fifth consecutive defeat. It's the second time this month and this season the Rockies have lost five straight games on the road, the other being Sept. 5-9 at Atlanta and Philadelphia.

Colorado lost Saturday and Sunday at San Diego before losing the first three-games of the four-game series at San Francisco.

In addition to five straight losses, the Rockies have lost seven of their past eight games and 12 of their past 14. They are 5-13 this month with 11 September games remaining. The fewest games the Rockies have won in September is nine; they went 9-14 in September 2003 and 9-16 in September 2011.

The latest loss was the team's 90th of the season. It is the fifth time in franchise history the Rockies have lost at least 90 games and the first time since they lost a franchise-high 95 games in 2005. The Rockies also lost 95 games in 1993, their first season. Their other seasons with 90 losses were 1999 (90) and 2004 (94).

In order to avoid losing a franchise-record 96 games, the Rockies must go 9-5 in their remaining games.

In the first three games at San Francisco, the Rockies have scored five runs. They were held to four hits for the second time in three games, and they have gone 16-for-90 (.178) in the series. With runners in scoring position, the Rockies are 3-for-17 (.176). They had just one at-bat with a runner in scoring position Wednesday. It came in the fifth after Colorado had scored its only run on DJ LeMahieu's sacrifice fly, and Carlos Gonzalez grounded out with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Tyler Chatwood gave up a three-run homer to Pablo Sandoval in the first, the only runs he allowed in four innings. He allowed eight hits and threw 84 pitches, 56 strikes. The homer came on an 1-2 slider near Sandoval's ankles, but the Giants third baseman pulled it, and the ball hit the foul pole. It was the second straight start Chatwood has found trouble in the first, but this time he lost.

On Friday at San Diego, the Rockies scored five runs in the first, and in the bottom of that inning, Chatwood gave up a grand slam to Yonder Alonso. Chatwood didn't pitch long enough to qualify for the win in that 7-4 Colorado victory, leaving after he allowed four runs and five hits and two walks in 3 2/3 innings. He threw 72 pitches.
