Ah me favorite series o’ t’ year. T’ time I get t’ speak like a man o’ t’ sea, t’ dreaded Pirate. After winnin’ two straight games against t’ Mets, T’ Friars dropped t’ first two, and t’ series hostin’ t’ Pirates at Petco Park. Though this be normally not a good thin’, thar be plenty o’ positives t’ take from this series. Here be me five.”
5. Another Great Start By “Doubloons”ner.
Andrew “Doubloons”ner was lights out again, surrenderin’ just one earned run on five hits while strikin’ out three and walkin’ two o’er seven innin’s pitched. T’ big blow came in t’ fourth with no outs when Pedro Alvarez sin’led t’ starboard with a man on first. Chris Denorfia, tryin’ t’ get t’ ball in t’ prevent t’ speedy Andrew McCutcheon from reachin’ third, let t’ ball roll under his glove and all t’ way t’ t’ wall, allowin’ both Alvarez and McCutcheon t’ score for an “in t’ park sin’le”.

Felix Pie will bring speed and some contact hitting to the Pirates, though not much else.
SAN DIEGO — No time for formalities. Why was outfielder Felix Pie called up Wednesday to join the Pirates’ roster?
“We felt he was our best available option,” Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said. “With Travis [Snider] being on the DL, Alex Presley and Andrew Lambo in limbo...
Clint Barmes drove in all three Pirates runs with his home run off Bumgarner. (Photo Credit: David Hague)
SAN FRANCISCO — Pirates fans are used to seeing Clint Barmes picking it at shortstop. Now he’s kicking it.
The right-handed batter has made a mechanical adjustment to his swing, kicking up his left leg as the pitch approaches. The result? Better hitting for Barmes, shown...
…Out of Center Field
Apologies to Elmore Leonard, whose death yesterday at the age of 87 inspired this post, if you can believe it.*
When Cameron Maybin went down with his knee injury, Bud Black had, to play center field, his choice of two fourth outfielders — Will Venable & Chris Denorfia. And a utility player who was seen by most as just an emergency outfielder, Alexi...
Yesterday was a big win for West Virginia in the playoff race, as they remain a half game ahead of Hickory for the second playoff spot in their division. Tonight they go with Tyler Glasnow on the mound, while Indianapolis throws the other top pitching prospect, Jameson Taillon. Indianapolis had off yesterday. The DSL regular season ends on Saturday. Erik Daniel Drost Many of my Buy or Sell posts have been about younger players. I think it’s time to give a couple of veterans some love. Chris Denorfia has earned more playing time in San Diego, while Michael Bourn and the Tribe are struggling in the month of August. Am I buying or selling? The AZL Padres enjoyed an outstanding start from Pete Kelich and a strong performance from Franmil Reyes in their 9-4 victory. The Emeralds and the Missions struggled offensively while the T-Pads and the TinCaps each won by 3 runs.

Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after a night in the pub. Here’s a friendly reminder of what you might have missed while you were drinking.
Tyson Ross was off his game last night but got the Padres into the 7th at 3-1 before the floodgates opened and the Pirates pushed ahead 8-1. This game was not a complete loss however. Well yes it was. But there was a positive: Jedd Gyorko...
Will Venable had three hits and three RBIs, including a tiebreaking solo homer in the seventh inning, and the San Diego Padres rallied to beat the Chicago Cubs 8-6 on Friday night.
Jedd Gyorko homered twice and drove in a career-high four runs as the Padres stormed back after a terrible start. Chase Headley and Logan Forsythe had two hits apiece.
Nate Schierholtz hit a three-run...
The Pirates are a team that tend to just go away. They play well the first half of the season, getting Pittsburgh fans excited they may make the playoffs, or at least hit the .500 mark, and they end up imploding in the second half like no other team. It’s come to the point where I don’t really pay attention to them in the standings. If they are in first and the Cardinals are...
A.J. Burnett had a lead before he took the mound Tuesday night. After that his usual serving of fastballs and knuckle curves did the trick.
Burnett rebounded from two mediocre outings during the Pirates' 8-1 win against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park their second win in a row. The St. Louis Cardinals' loss Tuesday night meant that the Pirates took a two-game lead in...
Pirates (75-52) at Giants (56-71)
10:15 PM–AT&T Park, San Francisco
The Bucs look to take the first two in their second straight series out west as they take on the Giants in another late game tonight. Once again, they’ll need to win or risk losing their lead in the division, depending on what St. Louis does. Cincinnati is playing very well now too...
It’s August 23rd. As I type this it’s August 22nd but by time you are reading it, it is August 23rd. As a Padres fan, the date is inconsequential. The season, insomuch as “the season” can be defined as having a legitimate shot at making the playoffs, is over. Yesterday Avenging Jack Murphy posted a brilliant piece of writing that was Camus like. About nothing and everything...
