Some players will compete until no one is willing to issue them a uniform. Others like Javier Vazquez are comfortable stepping away even though their needle is no where close to the ‘E.’
Friday, after throwing his first shutout since 2005, Vazquez reiterated his stance that this second-half renaissance will not impact his decision to play beyond 2011. In blanking the Nationals on five hits for his eighth career shutout, Vazquez became the fifth different pitcher age 35 or older to throw one this season.
Vazquez has shown no signs over the last three months that he wouldn’t be productive in 2012, but he appears to already have a foot out the door.
“There’s a time and a place where you have to just say, ‘Hey, I’ve been there, I’ve done it. I’ve done everything I’ve wanted to do in the game,’” first baseman Gaby Sanchez said. “He’s accomplished so much. It’s time to just walk away on a high note and be with his family.”…
