Without Matt Harvey to start games, Bobby Parnell to close games, and David Wright to help win games, few people would blame New York Mets fans for thanking the football Gods that the NFL is about to kick off and  we can get on with some sports betting.  At face value, the Mets should be a team that is ready to roll over and play dead as the season winds down, but that’s not exactly what’s happening.  Not only are players on the field, such as Daniel Murphy (14 for last 31) and Eric Young (10 for last 27), heating up, the ones that have been forced off the field with injury are doing everything they can to return as soon as possible and help their teammates. David Wright will start tracking pitches Thursday in PSL. By Sunday/Monday may start DHing in minor league games. — Adam Rubin (@AdamRubinESPN) August 27, 2013   Thank you everyone for the kind words and support. I may be done this year, but I will be back next year for April 1. — Matt Harvey (@MattHarvey33) August 27, 2013   With all that has happened Terry Collins has managed to keep his team from burying their heads in the sand while the 2013 season comes to an end.  Instead, New York has now won three of it’s last four games as guys like Zack Wheeler, Jon Niese, and Dillon Gee anchor a staff that has proven to be formidable  even without ace Matt Harvey. Photo by Michael G. Baron The Mets continue to fight and there’s something to be said for a group of guys that continue to demonstrate a will to win even in the face of adversity.  It speaks to the characters of the guys suiting up every day, it reflects their manager, and it shows a respect for the fans who pay to come watch this team play.  That being said, heading into 2014 the Mets will be short on payroll and in several areas, short on talent.  That’s a gap the front office and ownership must bridge.  The Wilpons have promised action and it’s a promise the players and fans will not take lightly if broken.  Nobody can argue that the loss of Matt Harvey for next season would prove to be devastating, but if the Metsecutives can manage to put together a competitive team in his absence, they will be looking at a serious contended when he returns in 2015. So the ball, or better yet the checkbook, is in ownerships hands.  Fans will eventually turn to football as the baseball season runs out, whether or not they decide to tune back into baseball when it resumes in 2014 is a decision ownership will influence mightily.
