Found June 14, 2013 on WHYGAVS?:
For at least the next turn or two, the Pirates' rotation is going to look something like this: Jeff Locke, Brandon Cumpton, Gerrit Cole, Francisco Liriano, Charlie Morton. This is pretty far from what anyone thought the rotaiton would look like in mid-June. That includes Charlie Morton and Brandon Cumpton, I think. And yet, here we are. Despite this avalanche of injuries, the Pirates are 12 games above .500 and they're still the odds-on favorite for the NL's second wild card.  That means that for now, the Pirates need to find a way to tread water until Wandy Rodriguez and AJ Burnett make their way back to the rotation. I think it's doable; certainly this makeshift rotation is a lot more talented than the makeshift rotations of the past. This weekend the Pirates get a middling and expensive Dodger team that just got slammed with a bunch of suspensions. Two wins in this series should be doable. Win two, and move on from there.  Jeff Locke has been a little shak...

First Pitch: Locke’s Anti-Regression, Cumpton a Bonus, and Jamestown

I didn’t have one specific thing I wanted to write about, but a few notes I was thinking about. So I went with more of a notes column, with three different topics below. Jeff Locke hasn’t regressed, but instead has improved his game. **About a month ago we were talking about Jeff Locke being a regression candidate going forward. That sparked the usual responses of “what if...

The Book on Brandon Cumpton

Brandon Cumpton will make his major league debut tomorrow. Earlier today we heard a report that Brandon Cumpton would be starting for the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday. Later, Clint Hurdle confirmed the report, which means it’s time for another installment of “The Book”. Or “The Book on”. I don’t know, I’ve only done this twice, and after the first time Phil Irwin...

Pirates Add Cumpton to 40-Man Roster; DFA Mike Zagurski

Mike Zagurski has been designated for assignment. (Photo by: David Hague) The Pittsburgh Pirates have added right-handed pitcher Brandon Cumpton to the 40-man roster for his start tonight. To make room, they have designated left-handed Mike Zagurski for assignment. The DFA of Zagurski also clears a spot for Cumpton on the 25-man roster. The DFA of Zagurski doesn’t come as a surprise...

Pittsburgh Pirates: Hurlde throws game, then Locke throws gem

(Opening image Jeff Locke; image credit post-gazette.) In retrospect, picking the finale of the Pirates-Giants series to attend in person was a bad decision.  Not only did it feature SP Charlie Morton attempting to get back in the saddle against one of the most consistently-dominant starters in the National League (SP Matt Cain), but it also featured some wonderfully incompetent...

Pirates Notebook: Charlie Morton Makes 2013 Debut… Now What?

Charlie Morton returns after nine rehab starts in the minor leagues. Pirates right-handed pitcher Charlie Morton returns to the mound Thursday night at PNC Park, facing the San Francisco Giants almost one year to the day since his reconstructive elbow surgery. Morton becomes the 10th different starting pitcher Pittsburgh has used, yet the Pirates still maintain the 5th-best rotation...

The return of Charlie Morton

Let's be straight about this: Charlie Morton is probably my favorite Pirate. The guy came through the minors with all of the talent in the world, but couldn't get it right in the big leagues. He completely scrapped his approach and rebuilt himself from the ground up, turning in one of the more pleasantly surprising Pirate performances in recent memory in 2011. It seemed like...

Pirates 3, Dodgers 0

Jeff Locke was stellar on Friday night as the Pirates entertained a sold out crowd at PNC Park by earning yet another shutout win. Locke was remarkably efficient. He was basically the definition of a pitcher “cruising” through seven innings. He needed a mere 75 pitches and allowed just two hits (one of them a leadoff bunt single) and one walk. Two of the three baserunners that...

Pirates Notebook: Projecting Rotation with Burnett Out, Cumpton In

Clint Hurdle confirmed Brandon Cumpton will make his MLB debut Saturday afternoon. Let’s review the Pirates’ scheduled starting rotation following the news that Brandon Cumpton will take the place of injured A.J. Burnett. Dodgers Series Friday: Jeff Locke Saturday: Brandon Cumpton (MLB Debut) Sunday: Gerrit Cole Reds Series Monday: Francisco Liriano Tuesday: Charlie Morton...

Pirates, Locke shut down reeling Dodgers 3-0

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Jeff Locke allowed just two hits over seven innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates edged the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-0 on Friday night. Locke (6-1) struck out five and walked one to win his sixth straight decision while shaving his ERA to 2.19. Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run double in the third inning off Stephen Fife (1-2). Jason Grilli worked out of a two-on, no...

Game 66: Giants 10 Pirates 0

It seems like poor form to try and take something positive out of this game because this game was pretty terrible, but, well, why dwell on the obvious?  Really, the only positive from this whole game is that despite the lackluster result, Charlie Morton does appear to be stronger as a result of his Tommy John surgery. Morton's average fastball velocity in 2010 was almost...

Game 66 Preview: Pirates vs. Giants

Giants (33-31) at Pirates (39-26) 7:05 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Pirates go for a sweep of the Giants tonight as they debut their second pitcher in three days. Pregame news: This isn’t good: A.J. Burnett will miss his start on Friday. Jeff Locke will move up a day to pitch that game, but that leaves the Bucs scrambling for another starter on Saturday...

Dodgers 5, Pirates 3

The Pirates fell to the Dodgers in a wild, wild game on Saturday afternoon, evening this weekend’s series. Brandon Cumpton immediately caught everyone’s attention with an incredible start to his big league debut. The righty isn’t known as a big strikeout guy, but he went right at the Dodgers and struck out all three batters in the first inning – then tacked on two more in...

Pirates Lose to Dodgers 5-3 in Extras: The 10 Big Moments

Travis Snider hit the game-tying home run in the 9th, but it was not enough for the Bucs to win. (Photo Credit: David Hague) What a fun baseball game, even if it did not turn out in the Pirates’ favor as the Bucs lost 5-3 in 11 innings. With so much happening, let’s boil this contest down to a series of moments: Moment 1: Brandon Cumpton walks off the field in the second inning...
