Former Angels Fan Favorite Emerges as Managerial Candidate, Says Insider

The offseason started earlier than planned for the Los Angeles Angels. Still, with just a few days left in October, it feels like the organization is almost behind schedule when it comes to naming a new manager and assembling a front office for the winter and for next season.

Several names have emerged on the managerial front, including veteran skipper Buck Showalter. Buck is the rumored favorite of GM Perry Minasian but reports say that he and team owner Arte Moreno aren't seeing eye to eye on that.

Another new name that has been linked to the job is an old friend and a fan favorite in Anaheim. According to USA Today, the Angels are considering Torii Hunter for the gig.

Torii Hunter, the five-time All Star and nine-time Gold Glove winner, has emerged as a candidate to fill the Los Angeles Angels’ managerial vacancy. Hunter spent five years playing for the Angels and is tremendously regarded by owner Arte Moreno for his leadership and baseball acumen.

Hunter has never managed at the big league or even minor league level, but in today's game, that's not unprecedented. However, coming off of Phil Nevin who was also a first time MLB manager, there may be a desire for a little more seasoning with their next skipper.

Who Are The Top Candidates for the Angels Manager Job?

Besides Hunter and Showalter, infield coach Benji Gil is also expected to get an interview for the opening. Gil is a favorite amongst some fans and insiders. The former big league catcher was the manager for Team Mexico in the World Baseball Classic this past spring and led his team to the semi-finals.

Ron Roenicke, a former coach under Mike Scioscia, has also been mentioned as a possible candidate in LA. He managed the Milwaukee Brewers from 2011-2015 and the Boston Red Sox in 2020.

Additional names include former Angels Darin Erstad and Tim Salmon. Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell could also emerge if he and the Brewers part ways in the coming weeks.

There are several managerial jobs open for clubs this offseason, so the Angels might want to move quickly to secure a new skipper.
