Former NFL MVP rips Mets' Pete Alonso for concert appearance

One-time NFL Most Valuable Player and current WFAN radio host Boomer Esiason ripped New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso for singing on stage with country music artist Zach Bryan on Saturday night during the Mets' ongoing losing streak.

"Pete, you gotta understand," Esiason explained during Monday's edition of the "Boomer and Gio" show, as shared by Jimmy Hascup of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com, "you’ve had all offseason to screw around, go to parties and go to concerts and do whatever you want, and nobody would say two bits about it, but when you go on stage at a concert on a Saturday night after you lost your first two games, and have a game at 1:40 the next (day), that’s a bad look...and you’re gonna get roasted for it."

Alonso is in the early stages of his walk season and is the subject of numerous rumors regarding his future. While he is batting .267 with one home run and a single RBI on the season, the Mets have dropped their first four games of what's quickly becoming a disappointing campaign for fans.

Esiason competed in a Super Bowl and also played for the New York Jets, so he knows a thing or two about featuring for a club that hosts games in the country's biggest sports market. He clearly believes Alonso should spend his off time being more focused on helping the Mets right the ship in early April.

"I’m sorry, that’s just not part and parcel to a winning athlete with a winning DNA and somebody that wants to lead their team out of the abyss," Esiason added about Alonso's weekend activities. "Maybe that’s old-school me. But when I saw that, I said, 'You’ve got to be kidding me.'"

Fans are hardly amused with the play of Alonso and company across the season's first four games. According to ESPN stats, the Mets began Tuesday tied for last in MLB with a total of eight runs scored. They will look to earn their first victory of the campaign when they host the 4-0 Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night.
