Former Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Pedro Borbon died Monday from complications of cancer, the team announced.

He was 65.

Borbon is the Reds leader in career pitching appearances with 531, and from 1970 through 1978, he appeared in more games than any other National League pitcher. He was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 2010.

"He may have been the most critical part of that great bullpen because he was such a rubber arm," former Reds star Tony Perez told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "He'd give two, three innings - whatever you needed. He could pitch every night. And he wasn't intimidated by anything. I always enjoyed his company on and off the field. He was a great guy."

Borbon, a native of the Dominican Republic, played for four major-league teams, but he was best known for his play with the Reds.

He was a member of the Reds' 1975 and 1976 World Series championship teams, and in 20 postseason appearances with the Reds from 1972-76, Borbon had a 1-1 record, 2.42 ERA and three saves.

In his 12 major-league seasons, Borbon compiled a 69-39 record, with 80 saves and a 3.52 earned-run average.

When the Reds traded Borbon to San Francisco in 1979, he reportedly put a voodoo curse on the club and said the Reds would never win another World Series. Borbon later said he had removed the curse.
