The Sports Jags:
If you think it’s rough being a fan of a team that hasn’t had a winning season in 19 years, try being the president. Pirates president Frank Coonelly has been charged with a DUI from Dec. 22.
This thing is all over the Burgh right now but we’ll give credit to Dejan Kovacevic because he’s the man. His story is here.
Coonelly’s dewey could rival Matthew Barnaby’s DWI from around the same time for best/worst of the year so far. Apparently Coonelly was charged with drunken driving, driving the wrong way (always a solid way to get busted), careless driving and having a BAC of .16 (Here in PA, and just about everywhere else, you’ve got to keep it under .08).
Here’s how it went down: Frank got hammered (we’re still not sure where), and thought he’d take the Parkway North home, only he made a wrong turn and ended up going the wrong direction so he decided to make a U-turn…”that’s when the police came.”
Coonelly’s down in Pirate City now and he probably won’t be talking to the media any time today, which is probably a good thing. Another good thing is that Frank supposedly called Bob Nutting as soon as all this happened to apologize (we like to think Frank was still blitzed when he called, so imagine that phone call).
Because he’s a family man, great with the fans and has a clean track record up until now, Nutting will most likely let Frank keep his job with minimal discipline. Remember Frank, Designated Driver is your friend – it’s $5 and you get to ride in a limo.

Frank Coonelly’s DUI wasn’t the only bad off-field news for the Pirates on Thursday. Ryan Braun shocked the baseball world by winning the appeal on his 50-game suspension for his positive drug test last year.
Braun’s winning argument apparently centered around this:
The collector, after getting Braun’s sample, was supposed to take the sample to FedEx/Kinkos for shipping but...
The pertinent details are here. In short, he got a DUI shortly before Christmas, he's ashamed, and Bob Nutting is disappointed. It seems like Coonelly is willing to accept the consequences for his actions and it seems like Nutting is willing to stand behind him. I don't really have a lot to add: I'm sure that the significant portion of the fanbase that dislikes Coonelly...

The best outcome would be for Pirates president Frank Coonelly and the team to squeeze some good out of this situation.
It has been confirmed that 93.7 is currently censoring their hosts from talking about Frank Coonelly’s DUI. As you know “The FAN” broadcasts the Pirates and this is a pathetic example of them bowing to the hand feeds them. Its obvious this is happening judging from the on air content, but we’ve confirmed it with [...]
Pittsburgh Pirates President, and PR nightmare, Frank Coonelly was arrested for DUI. I really kicked around even writing about this before I realized that I did it for Hines Ward I might as well do it in this case too. I’m not a Front Office hater or whatever wants to be said, but Coonelly’s actions [...]
Camp is now in full swing down in Bradenton. While it’s certainly great to have news tidbits, pictures, and videos flowing in…there’s honestly not a whole lot to talk about yet. You should all be following Bill Brink, Michael Sanserino, Rob Biertempfel, Tom Singer, and Kristy Robinson to make sure you don’t miss any of those news bits, because I’m not going to be able to...
