With just two weeks until MLB's opening day of the 2013 season, former St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher and current free agent Kyle Lohse is still looking for a home and a place to play this season. As was discussed on a recent episode of The Cruddy Show, there have been plenty of excuses made for why Kyle Lohse has not been signed at this point, most notably, that a team would have to give up a first round draft pick in this June's draft. While first round picks are valuable, it is hard to fathom that a calculated gamble on a player that has just as much of a chance of not making it to the Majors as he does making it, is not as valuable as an experienced innings horse who posted a 16-3 record last season for the Cardinals. How much longer will it take for Kyle Lohse to get fed up with the situation and hold somebody accountable? No, I am not talking about Lohse accusing MLB team's of collusion or blaming the most recent collective bargaining agreement for the r...

Are the Cardinals really pursuing Astros' Bud Norris and Lucas Harrell?

Let me preface this by saying that I really respect Peter Gammons.  He is one of the best reporters in the game.  However a tweet from him this morning had me scratching my head. Here is the tweet from Gammons at 11:23 AM this morning: "Cards are asking about a SS as well as P. Interested in Lucas Harrell and Bud Norris of Astros." The Cardinals currently have Joe...

Miller, Kelly continue battle for fifth spot

JUPITER, Fla. Shelby Miller knows what will happen if best friend Joe Kelly is tabbed as the Cardinals fifth starter over him. "If he gets the fifth spot, I'm not going to talk to him anymore," Miller quipped. Jokes aside, the roommates find themselves as the two remaining competitors to be the fifth starter in the Cardinals' rotation. The situation could be...

St. Louis Cardinals: Who should be the Cardinals' fifth starter?

The fight for the fifth spot in the St. Louis Cardinals' starting rotation has been one of the most followed stories throughout spring training. Manager Mike Matheny has held an open competition for the spot throughout spring camp and there are just two contestants remaining after Trevor Rosenthal's move to the bullpen last week and Michael Wacha's assignment to Memphis...

Cardinals minor league spring training notebook: 03/17/13

On Sunday, the St. Louis Cardinals minor leaguers had five games against the Miami Marlins minor leaguers. All were on the Miami side of the complex except for Peoria 2’s game, which was on St. Louis’ diamonds, all at Roger Dean. Only Peoria 2, the lowest-level club, was victorious. Not only did they shut out the Marlins’ fifth club, they almost no-hit them. Memphis (three...

St. Louis Cardinals: Will Adam Wainwright sign contract extension before opening day?

On Friday, the St. Louis Cardinals announced that ace starter Adam Wainwright would make the opening day start when the team kicks off the 2013 season on the road at Arizona on April 1. Wainwright certainly deserves the opening day start, but will the Cardinals also reward Wainwright with a contract offer before then? As was discussed on Friday night's episode of The Cruddy...

Wainwright strong again for Cardinals

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- Adam Wainwright has no idea who the fan was that gave him that picture last week. He'd sure like to tell them thank you. Wainwright limited Washington to one run in six strong innings in the St. Louis Cardinals' 5-1 exhibition victory over the Nationals on Friday, his second consecutive impressive start since a fan helped him fix a mechanical flaw....

Cardinal Odds & The Friday Links

We're inching closer to real baseball, and today the Cardinals announced that Adam Wainwright will be the Opening Day starter.  This surprises no one. But there are still some big issues to resolve before the Cardinals start the season. So let's break down where we're at headed into the last 2 weeks of spring. Oscar. Will he make the team? Looks like this...

Cardinals 5, Nationals 1

Adam Wainwright limited Washington to one run in six strong innings and Matt Adams hit a three-run homer in the St. Louis Cardinals' 5-1 exhibition victory over the Nationals on Friday. Facing mostly Washington backups, Wainwright took a shutout into the sixth inning and allowed only three hits in his second consecutive impressive start. Jon Jay and Adams homered in a four...

Pitching Showcase

Spring Training 2013 was not supposed to be an exciting one for the St. Louis Cardinals.  A team that had made very few offseason moves was primarily set for the upcoming season.  Then, an injury to a veteran starter opened up a door.   Cardinals prospect Michael Wacha The injury to Chris Carpenter might have opened up a door but the depth within the organization has kicked it...

Kyle Lohse rumors: Brewers still in on free agent?

The Milwaukee Brewers – like many other MLB teams – have said time and time again that they are not going to sign free agent right-hander Kyle Lohse. Still, Tom Haudricourt of The Journal Sentinel believes there’s still a chance Milwaukee reaches an agreement with Lohse. Haudricourt says he’ll believe the Brewers won’t sign Lohse when the free agent officially...

Rangers still in contact with Lohse

Kyle Lohse went through this as a free agent once before. Five years ago on Thursday, he signed a one-year, $4.25 million contract with the St. Louis Cardinals.   This time, Lohse is taking even longer to find a new team.   Lohse, 34, is working out both near his home in Arizona and at a facility operated by his agent, Scott Boras – the Boras Sports Training Institute in Aliso...

Kyle Lohse rumors: Rangers, others eyeing free agent

Kyle Lohse is continuing to work out near his home in Arizona despite the fact that he remains unsigned. Teams – including the Texas Rangers – continue to show interest in the free agent, and his agent Scott Boras says he’s still seeking a “big” three-year contract for his client, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
