In 1998 the New York Mets signed an 18 year-old, Nelson Cruz, out of the Dominican Republic. However, the Mets then traded Cruz in 2000 to the Oakland Athletics for Jorge Velandia.

Update: Nelson Cruz is a beast. He just hit a two-run homer off of Verlander in the top of the 8th inning. Detroit is still up 7-4.
