Gabino's big break? (source: TwinkieTown)

The Orioles have recalled Armando Gabino from AAA Norfolk. He’ll take the place of the injured David Hernandez, who sprained his ankle in last night’s game. Hernandez will be placed on the 15 day DL.

Gabino has limited MLB experience, he pitched 3.2 innings for the Twins in 2009 and was claimed off waivers by the O’s during the off season. So far in 2010 Gabino has combined for a 7-0 record, 2.23 ERA and 1.029 WHIP in 80 innings for Norfolk and Bowie. He’s only allowed 61 hits and 22 walks to go along with 70 strikeouts. Hernandez has been one of the most dependable arms in the O’s bullpen so his injury is certainly a disappointment. It does however give Gabino, 26, a chance to make an impression on Buck Showalter and perhaps a leg up towards earning a spot on the 2011 roster. Given Gabino’s minor league success he certainly seems like a better option than Matt Albers or Mark Hendrickson.
