Cardinals (62-41) at Pirates (62-42) 4:05–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday: Game 1 // Game 2 TV: ROOT (both), MLBN (Game 1) After a great start to the series, the Pirates are back at it today against the Cardinals in a doubleheader – making up a rainout in April. The Pirates are within a half game of first place, but they’ll need to sweep the DH to hold the top spot at the end of the day. A split would be just fine, of course, and a sweep would hardly be devastating, but if the Bucs can continue to play well (and take advantage of the Cards’ recent slump), picking up two games would be fantastic. Today’s starters… Lance Lynn (12-5, 3.98) vs. A.J. Burnett (4-7, 2.96) Lynn has 12 wins thanks to a ton of run support and hasn’t pitched all that well lately, but he seems to do well against the Bucs even when slumping. Let’s hope the bats stay hot after exploding last night. Burnett is the opposite of Lynn – no run support, good pitching, deserving of more wins. AJ recovered from a bad first inning at Washington (the defense let him down for the 2nd straight game) to grind out seven good innings. Some of his best work as a Pirate has come against this great Cardinal lineup. Tyler Lyons (2-3, 5.51) vs. Brandon Cumpton (0-1, 4.02) or Stolmy Pimentel (0-0, 0.00) Lyons looked like one of those typical Cardinal youngsters that comes out of nowhere and has success, but struggled after a couple of good starts to begin his career. He’s been in the minors lately and has done well there, but the Bucs should have a chance to get to the lefty. Cumpton has done a serviceable job in a spot starter role a few times this season and will be called on again today. Hopefully Burnett can get deep in to the game and save the bullpen for Cumpton, since he’s been far less effective after 4-5 innings in his previous MLB starts. Pimentel, from the Hanrahan trade, will make his major league debut. He’s on the 40-man and it was his day to pitch, so here he is. He has posted a solid 2.60 ERA in 8 starts with Indy this year (40 K, 13 BB in 52 innings).
