One of my all-time favorite Pittsburgh Pirate memories of the early 1990s is the Curtis Wilkerson Grand Slam game. The name is pretty explanatory, but the Pirates entered the ninth inning down 1-0 against the Cardinals in a mid-September game, and after they tied the game up at one, utilityman Wilkerson stepped up against Lee Smith with the bases loaded and hit a walkoff grand slam. Wilkerson only played in 85 games as a Pirate and he only hit two home runs, but I'll never forget that one. It happened late at night as our family drove through the outskirts of Chicago on our way to see family, and just as Wilkerson hit his home run we drove under a bridge that made us briefly lose the radio signal.  A lot of the details are different tonight; Harrison is a young player, while Wilkerson was a veteran. The Pirates are locked in the middle of a tooth-and-nail division fight with the Cardinals this time around, as opposed to having the race sewn up the way they did the night of W...

Pirates Playoff Roster Projection: Choosing a Champion

We know Starling Marte and Andrew McCutchen are in, but not every roster spot is easy to suss out. (Photo by: David Hague) This is not a jinx. On this day last year, the Pirates’ playoff odds were hovering around 50 percent. Their chances to make the postseason this year are above 98 percent. Starting to think about what the 25-man playoff roster will look like is not counting...

The Debate: Should Jameson Taillon Be a September Callup?

Jameson Taillon has only made one start at the Triple-A level. That start was rough at first, with three earned runs in the first inning before Taillon settled down. He has time to make about five more starts before the end of the Triple-A regular season. Therefore, it’s probably too early to talk about him making the jump to the majors. But that discussion started long before...

First Pitch: How Many Teams Around MLB Would Charlie Morton Start For?

I’ve talked about Charlie Morton a lot in the last week, arguing that he deserves to be in the starting rotation. There are plenty of anti-Morton Pirates fans who feel that Morton shouldn’t even be on the team. His strong overall numbers are chalked up to being a fluke, and his bad starts are highlighted. In short, if Charlie Morton is doing well this year, it’s just a small...

Charlie Morton Grounds Marlins in 4-2 Pirates Victory

Charlie Morton was dropping his sinker and curveball below the Marlins bats in a winning effort. Charlie Morton is the ground ball. The ground ball, Charlie. The Pirates starter faced 25 Marlins batters, saw 20 of his pitches put into play and 15 ground balls to produce a quality start. He...

Pirates Playoff Odds Remain Above 98 Percent into August

Sellout crowds for October baseball are in PNC Park’s future. (Photo Credit: David Hague) The Pirates won four out of five games from the St. Louis Cardinals and two out of three from the Colorado Rockies last week. That is, hold on while I get my dictionary… A good thing. Good. Hmm, that’s a new word. Anyway, Pittsburgh sat just under 98 percent playoff odds one week ago...

Pirates 4, Marlins 2

Charlie Morton retired his final 11 batters over seven strong innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates maintained the best record in the majors with a 4-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on Wednesday night. Morton (4-3) shook off a shaky beginning in which he allowed six hits over his first three-plus innings to beat Miami for the second time in an 11-day span. Morton, who also had an...
