Pirates (70-44) at Rockies (52-64)
8:40–Coors Field, Denver
The Bucs are on top of the world right now – not quite literally (although they are certainly quite high up in Denver) – but certainly figuratively. The best team in baseball will just look to keep it rolling tonight and this weekend. The Pirates hold a four game lead on the Cards, and as of right now all sights are set on the division title. The Bucs take on the slumping Rockies this weekend while St. Louis hosts the Cubs. Then the Bucs and Cards will meet again at Busch next week. I’d love to see the Bucs enter that series with a healthy lead and a chance to deliver a knockout punch.
Francisco Liriano (12-4, 2.02) vs. Jorge De La Rosa (10-6, 3.31)
Liriano’s most recent start was against De La Rosa and the Rockies and it went quite well – as most have for Frankie this season. The lefty will look to keep on dominating and will inch closer to becoming eligible for the NL ERA league leaders (he’ll need a few more good starts to get there).
De La Rosa is having a good season but the Pirates handled him very well last weekend. They worked counts, had strong at bats, got him out of the game quickly, and scored three runs against him in a solid victory. Tonight they will look for more of that in a very hitter-friendly yard.
