Pirates (93-68) at Reds (90-71) 1:10 PM–Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT, TBS The Pirates have played a lot of meaningless September baseball over the years, and today they will do so yet again. Of course, this time it’s a good thing, as they wrapped up Wild Card home field yesterday and have nothing to play for this afternoon. As you would expect, the lineups resemble a spring training matchup, with Pedro Alvarez as the only full-time regular getting a start. That’s because he has a chance at the NL Home Run crown (he’s tied with Arizona’s Paul Goldschmidt), which would be a cool accomplishment. Today’s starters… Brandon Cumpton (1-1, 2.45) vs. Greg Reynolds (1-2, 5.55) Again, both teams will be throwing guys who have essentially been emergency options for most of the season. Cumpton has come up and done a tremendous job giving the Pirates a decent start (or much better, in the case of his last one) when they needed somebody to take the ball. He’s earned another big league start today. Jeff Locke could have gone, but I think the Bucs have already told him he’s done for the year…and it would be a shame to see him get beat up again. Reynolds is basically in the same boat, but hasn’t been as good in his emergency outings. Hopefully he will give Pedro a chance to win that home run crown outright. He has made one stellar start and four mediocre-to-bad ones, and certainly won’t be facing much of a challenging lineup today: Here’s the #Pirates lineup for the final regular season game of 2013. #LetsGoBucs pic.twitter.com/l8xwHrnYM6 — Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) September 29, 2013
