Homer Bailey failed in his attempt for back-to-back no-hitters.It took until the final game of the year for the Cincinnati Reds to play a meaningless game in the 2012 season. Thanks to the Los Angeles Dodgers losing and giving the St. Louis Cardinals the second wild card and the Washington Nationals winning and clinching the best record in the National League, the outcome of last night’s game had no meaning whatsoever. And it felt like almost every Spring Training game I’ve ever attended. It was so much like Spring Training, that I expected the game to be called off early should the game finish in a tie. There was the starter, Homer Bailey, pitching for only 4 innings. He did well, allowing no runs on 4 hits while striking out 6. But he left early to give the bullpen some work. Then there were all the later inning substitutions, providing a parade of minor league prospects onto the field. Tony Cingrani and Henry Rodriguez were chief among them. But the game was managed loosely, in a...

Reds set their rotation for NLDS

Cueto will anchor the rotation yet again The Redlegs have officially announced their rotation for the National League Division Series. It had been rumored that the 3-man rotation would consist of Johnny Cueto in Game One, Bronson Arroyo in Game Two, and Mat Latos in Game Three. Dusty Baker confirmed those suspicions on Tuesday. “We’ve been planning this for a while...

Pete Rose In Mandalay Bay Sportsbook Watching Homer Bailey’s No-Hitter? Looks Like It

That’s definitely Pete Rose in the Mandalay Bay sportsbook last week. The bigger issue here is if that’s a Cincinnati Reds game on the big screen. What other teams have a red hat with black bill? Another tidbit of interest is that this photo was uploaded September 28, which happens to be the night Homer Bailey threw the first Reds no-hitter since Tom Browning’s perfect game...

Navarro getting his kicks with the Reds

There are eight flat screen televisions hanging in the palatial and spacious Cincinnati Reds clubhouse, seven of them usually tuned in to baseball games or football games on Saturdays and Sundays. The eighth TV is directly in front of catcher Dioner Navarro's locker and it is always tuned in to a soccer match from somewhere around the world. And Navarro sits in front of his...

Cincinnati turns away Redbirds, remains in hunt for top seed

The Reds (97-64) remained in contention to earn the National League's No. 1 seed by defeating the host Cardinals (87-74), 3-1, on Tuesday night. Mat Latos improved to 14-4 with considerable help from his bullpen. Meanwhile, Cincinnati's offense was fueled by Scott Rolen and Dioner Navarro, who both tallied a pair of hits in the contest. One of Rolen's was of...

Time set for Game One of the Reds-Giants NLDS

The Nationals (98-64) secured the best record in the National League on Wednesday, but more importantly they earned the No. 1 seed as well. They did so by downing the Phillies, 5-1.That means the Reds will head into the postseason as the No. 2 seed, and will begin their journey to the World Series in San Francisco for Game One of the NLDS on Saturday. Here's a look at...

Mat Latos won his fourth straight decision to finish the regular season and Scott Rolen homered off Chris Carpenter, helping the Cincinnati Reds keep the St. Louis Cardinals' postseason plans on hold with a 3-1 victory Tuesday night. These Guys are Like Family

I was talking with Mrs. Diamond Hoggers tonight. We were talking about the impending baseball playoffs and the stress I’m feeling about the Reds. She mentioned that as long as her Yankees make the World Series she’ll be happy. And then she quickly had a turn of face. Like I pointed out in jingoistic fashion, this is really her team. Even if she doesn’t know it. How could...

Here come the playoffs

Another year, another set of baseball playoffs without the Pirates. My own personal rooting interests in 2012 are, in order: A's Tigers Reds (I don't care what you say about Brandon Phillips, I like the Reds; I say the Reds being good is proof the Pirates can do it) Giants (why do my four favorite playoff teams play each other in the division...

Projecting Giants vs. Reds NLDS

After missing last year the welcome pangs of nervousness have come back with the Giants back in the playoffs. In the National League Division series the Giants face the NL Central Champion Reds. The Reds are a very good team and this series shouldn't be easy for either team. Here is the statistical breakdown for each team: Offense AVG OBP SLG wOBA...
