The easiest and probably most accurate way to describe the Pirates' 3-1 loss to the Cubs on Opening Day at PNC Park is probably this: it was cold out and when it's cold out, hard-throwing pitchers seem to do well, and as a result AJ Burnett and Jeff Samardzija combined for 19 strikeouts between them in just 13 2/3 innings combined work.  Burnett was particularly awesome to watch today, setting ten Cubs down on strikes in his 5 2/3 innings. He gave up all three Cubs' runs, though; two of them came when Anthony Rizzo destroyed a mistake fastball in the first inning and one more came when Garrett Jones attempted poorly to play right field, letting a Wellington Castillo flyball drop for an RBI double on the warning track in right center. Other than that, Burnett was mostly unhittable. The bullpen behind him, which got called in for quite a bit of work due to Burnett needing 98 pitches to get through his 5 2/3 inning start in his quest to strike out All Of The Cubs, was a...

A.J. Burnett has rosin bag explode on him during Opening Day start (Animated)

Pittsburgh Pirates ace A.J. Burnett had a pretty rough first game of the season on Monday. His pitching performance was actually quite solid, as Burnett threw 5.2 innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits. He also managed to strike out 10 Chicago Cubs, but the Pirates were unable to give him any run support and went on to lose 3-1. Oh, and then there was the whole exploding...

A.J. Burnett’s Rosin Bag Bursts During Opening Day Start for Pirates (Animation)

Simple accident, or April Fools’ Day prank? A.J. Burnett was mowing down Cubs batters left and right — striking out nine batters through four innings and surrendering just one home run in the process. But when Burnett took the mound before the start of the fifth inning, his luck suddenly changed. When reached for the rosin bag — usually used to dry a pitcher’s hand — ...

A.J. Burnett Falls For The Old Exploding Rosin Bag Trick

It is safe to say that A.J. Burnett isn’t having a perfect day so far, and an exploding rosin bag is just the icing on the cake of giving up three runs to the Cubs in just 5.2 innings. [Deadspin] Article found on: Next Impulse Sports

A.J. Burnett has rosin bag explode on him during Pirates/Cubs

It's not often that you see a rosin bag explode during a Major League Baseball game but during today's Pirates/Cubs game, Pittsburgh starting pitcher A.J. Burnett had one explode on him. Not yet confirmed if this was an April Fool's Day prank or not: (Courtesy of Next Impulse Sports)

Pittsburgh’s A.J. Burnett had a spot of trouble with the rosin bag on Opening Day

A.J. Burnett’s 2013 season didn’t get off to the greatest of starts yesterday, as the Bucs hurler took the loss after Pittsburgh fell to the Cubs (the Cubs?!?!?) 3-1. It wasn’t all Burnett’s fault—he gave up 3 earned runs in 5 2/3 innings, while striking out 10—as his team only managed three hits and one measly run off Chicago starter Jeff Samardzija, who was brilliant...

Cubs' Samardzija, Pirates' Burnett ready to open

Jeff Samardzija can only hope his performance Monday matches his last opening game in Pittsburgh. Samardzija will start for the Chicago Cubs and A.J. Burnett for the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday as two teams with long streaks of futility meet on opening day. The Cubs haven't won a World Series since 1908 and the Pirates haven't had a winning season since 1992. After losing...

Opening Day postgame thread – Cubs 3, Pirates 1

Cubs win! The Cubs took an early lead on a first inning home run by Anthony Rizzo that still hasn't landed. Combine that with eight strong innings by Jeff Samardzija (two hits, one walk, 9 strikeouts) and it's a recipe for a Cubs win. Carlos Marmol made the end of the game interesting by doing Carlos Marmol things at the beginning of the ninth, but Sveum rightly pulled him...
