Raise the Jolly Roger!:
Nationals (15-14) at Pirates (16-12)
7:05 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh
TV: MLB.TV (free today, but blacked out in Pittsburgh and DC Markets)
The Bucs open up what should be a fun weekend series against the Nats on a beautiful night at PNC. Washington is one of the favorites in the NL but hasn’t been all that great so far – particularly on offense. They do have Bryce Harper, though, and he’s been amazing – plus 3B Ryan Zimmerman is back for this series. And you may have heard that their pitching is pretty good.
Some quick notes:
The game’s not on ROOT because of the Pens. MLB Network isn’t picking it up. MLBTV is blacked out in the Pittsburgh market, but if you’re elsewhere the game is free there today. So ironically, you can watch if you’re not in Pittsburgh but can’t watch in Pittsburgh.
The Bucs made two notable roster moves earlier today.
Jason Grilli was named the MLB Delivery Man of April, which I presume means best reliever/closer.

According to Baseball America’s latest minor league transactions, the Pittsburgh Pirates have signed right-handed pitcher Jeff Gibbs. Gibbs was released by the Arizona Diamondbacks on April 18th.
Gibbs was a ninth round pick in the 2012 draft. He sits in the low-90s and can reach the mid-90s, with an average slider and change. Last year he pitched in short-season ball, but didn’t...

Three videos today from the after the Nationals’ 5-4 win against the Pirates at PNC Park.
Clint Hurdle’s interview is broken up into two parts and I was even able to snag some of Stephen Strasburg’s clubhouse interview. I’ll have a recap of today’s game up this evening but for now enjoy the videos.
Jordy Mercer has finally made his way to Pittsburgh. No telling if he will play or not but he’s here. He is taking the place of Neil Walker who the Pirates didn’t put on the DL after CUTTING HIS HAND TO THE BONE. This move is retroactive to 4/27. That means the Pirates played with…
So Bryce Harper left last night's game in the sixth inning, causing quite a scare. In the video above, Harper and Davey Johnson discuss the injury. Good news: it's not his oblique. Bad news: it's a bad bruise. Bad enough to sit him in tonight's series finale?

Jayson Werth may be sitting out all weekend because of his sore hammy, but he got in on the ceremonial untucking of the shirt action on Saturday after Rafael Soriano nailed down the save
Nationals 5, Pirates 4: Davey takes BP, holds team meeting before game, Nats make him look like a genius.
Update: Nats win, but hours later discover several men still left on base.
The Washington Nationals employed the double steal in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Pittsburgh 5-4 on Saturday.
After the double steal by Ryan Zimmerman and Adam LaRoche, Nationals outfielder Tyler Moore hit a sacrifice fly to score Zimmerman. In the bottom of the inning Rafael Soriano notched his 10th save of the season.
The win came hours after manager Davey Johnson held...
Washington Nationals right-handed starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg experienced no pain during his bullpen session yesterday, according to Amanda Comak of The Washington Times. Since he was able to log the session without discomfort, Strasburg remains on track to make his next regularly scheduled start Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Davey said Stephen Strasburg'...
Barrett Barnes has been placed on the DL.
Catching up on some minor league moves:
**The West Virginia Power have placed Barrett Barnes on the 7-day disabled list. As Tom Bragg reported on Wednesday, Barnes had a hamstring injury. The DL placement was retroactive May 2nd.
**After Jordy Mercer was promoted to the majors, Jeff Larish was added to the Indianapolis roster.
Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson’s benching of starting second basemen Danny Espinosa on May1 against the Braves indicated that the Nationals’ middle infield is still not completely set. The benching also slid power-hitting shortstop Ian Desmond into the cleanup spot in the line-up, and responded by driving in the only two runs for the Nationals in a 2-0 win over the...
While their injury issues have played a role in their recent slump, the Washington Nationals could get a boost offensively in the opener of a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Ryan Zimmerman will likely return to the lineup on Friday night as he looks to help the Nationals win their third straight on a seven-game road trip.
After hitting .282 with 25 homers and...
A 5-4 loss to the Washington Nationals. I can normally deal with that. Stephen Strasburg pitched for the Nats. They are supposed to be one of the best teams in the NL. The bullpen was horribly mismanaged in the loss but that is to be expected. Clint Hurdle has done this before. Even then, I…
