Raise the Jolly Roger!:
Pirates (18-15) at Mets (13-17)
7:10 PM–Citi Field, New York
TV: MLB.TV (Free today, but blacked out in Pittsburgh)
The Bucs are in the Big Apple for the weekend as they get set to take on the Mets in a four game series. The Mets aren’t all that interesting of a team and it looks like they’re going to be stuck battling Philly for 3rd in the NL East behind the Braves and Nats. Still, they’ve dominated the Pirates at Citi Field since it opened – the Bucs are just 12-3 there. They moved the fences at Citi in a bit before the season in hopes of more offense, and so far the Mets have been in the middle of the pack in terms of runs scored and allowed at home.
No TV in Pittsburgh tonight because of the Pens. If you’re outside Pittsburgh or NY, you can watch for free on MLBTV.
Jeff Locke (3-1, 3.21) vs. Dillon Gee (2-4, 6.16)
Locke had his scoreless string interrupted in his last start (against the Nats on Sunday) but wasn’t too bad in that game. He was li...

Rafael Montero Looks Intimidating (Photo by MMO Contributor Gordon Donovan)
Some people believe that we were put on this planet to serve a purpose. They believe that we were all put here for a reason. Well if that is the case, Rafael Montero was put on this planet for one reason: to pitch.
Montero was going through the Trenton Thunder lineup with surgical precision tonight, prompting...
Dwight Gooden should be known as the greatest pitcher ever for the New York Mets. He was simply tantalizing when he arrived as a rookie in 1984, and immediately became the most dominating pitcher in the entire league. His first three seasons are almost unparalleled and he topped it off with a World Series ring in 1986. There is a ton of excitement around rookie Matt Harvey at the...
While Ike Davis grabs all of the attention for duplicating his rough start from a season ago, almost no attention is being given to David Wright once again getting off to a terrific start. Unlike last year at this time, the Mets are under .500 and all of the buzz centers around Matt Harvey and John Buck. However, Wright deserves praise for getting out of the gate quick.
Palm Beach 7, St. Lucie 3
St Lucie’s six game winning streak was snapped tonight by the Palm Beach Cardinals. St Lucie’s starter Angel Cuan pitched six solid innings in the loss. Cuan allowed one unearned run in the second inning, and surrendered a solo home run to Stephen Piscotty in the fourth inning. St. Lucie was leading 3-2 in the seventh when Cuan exited the game. While...
Once upon a time, not so long ago, the Mets had a top ten prospect named Zack Wheeler who was deemed the heir apparent to their oft-maligned rotation. It had to be Wheeler, who would assume the role of staff ace. Especially with the controversial trade of surprising knuckleballer, RA Dickey. It seemed unanimous that Wheeler, his high nineties fastball, and array of formidable...
For Indianapolis today, top prospect Gerrit Cole will be on the mound, trying to continue his streak of quality starts after a rough beginning to the season. Also going today are the top two pitchers in starter ERA in the system, Stolmy Pimentel for Altoona and Orlando Castro for West Virginia. All four affiliates won yesterday, a total of five wins with the doubleheader for West...
Last Night’s Quick Scores
Las Vegas edged out Round Rock, 3-2.
Binghamton dropped to Trenton, 5-1.
St. Lucie blasted Daytona, 13-3.
Savannah topped Hickory, 9-6.
It was supposed to be an epic matchup of top pitching prospects in Trenton, between the B-Mets and the Trenton Thunder yesterday — the Double-A version of the Subway Series. Rafael Montero...
Mets begin a series with the Pirates where they will see a bunch of LHP, including tonight. No Ike Davis in the lineup for the 7:10 PM start.

Jeremy Hefner’s overall numbers look poor this year (0-3, 4.34 ERA) but he’s pitched much better than his record indicates. He’s made five starts – and one horrid relief appearance – and three of them he’s pitched well enough to win. All three of those outings were Quality Starts and in them he threw 21 IP and allowed 4 ER.
The good news for Hefner is that two of his...
This had Harvey Haddix written all over it, but fortunately, the Mets were un-Mets-ian enough Tuesday night to pull out the victory, even if their pitcher didn’t get the win.
Matt Harvey went nine innings against the White Sox on Tuesday and struck out 12, with his attempt at a perfect game marred only by an Alex Rios infield single with two outs in the seventh. Despite Harvey...
Pirates (18-16) at Mets (14-17)
7:10 PM–Citi Field, New York
The Bucs look to even this weekend’s series against the Mets tonight at Citi Field. The Mets’ new yard has not been friendly to the Pirates – they are just 3-13 there. House of Horrors 2.0?
Wandy Rodriguez (2-2, 4.02) vs. Shaun Marcum (0-2, 7.20)

St. Lucie 13, Daytona 3
Matthew Bowman pitched six innings and struck out seven to earn his first win in his Florida State League debut as the Mets defeated the Daytona Cubs 13-3 on Tuesday.
The Mets(20-11) won their fourth straight game and have won the first three games of the series between the two teams.
Bowman allowed three runs and six hits and issued just one walk.
Center fielder Juan Lagares robbed Andrew McCutchen of a go-ahead hit in the top of the ninth inning, then pinch-hitter Mike Baxter's single in the bottom half sent the New York Mets over the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 Thursday night.
Baxter delivered his second winning pinch-hit in three days. His 10th-inning single Tuesday beat the Chicago White Sox.
This time, Baxter batted...
There was much excitement for todays anticipated pitchers’ duel between AJ Burnett and “King” Felix Hernandez. Hernandez was the better pitcher today as the Mariners edged the Pirates 2-1 to split the 2-game series. The first inning went the Pirates’ way. After a perfect top of the inning by AJ, Starling Marte doubled to lead…
In the wins are a totally useless statistic file you can add Matt Harvey’s start last night. He pitched a one-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts. Even had a perfect game going until Alex Rios dribbled out an infield single in the 7th. But because the Mets are the Mets, they were unable to score a run until the 10th leaving Mr. Harvey with a no decision for all his efforts. Needless...
