Ben Whitehead Contributing Writer After colliding on a foul ball catch, both Will Middlebrooks (right side pain) and David Ross (left quad bruise) take the night off as the Boston Red Sox (21-12) look to somehow get things going after losing four of their last five. The Sox take on the Minnesota Twins (14-15) in Game 3 of this four-game set at Fenway Park. The teams split the first two games and both turn to young bucks to take the series advantage. Allen Webster (0-0, 3.00 ERA), a 23-year-old, makes his second start for the Red Sox. The righty gave up three runs (two earned) in six innings in his only other start, which came on April 21 against the Kansas City Royals. The Twins counter with Pedro Hernandez, a 24-year-old lefty, who is 1-0 with a 3.92 ERA in five appearances (three starts) this season. Here’s the lineup John Farrell has put together (first pitch – 7:10 pm EDT): 1. Ellsbury, CF 2. Victorino, RF 3. Pedroia, 2B 4. Ortiz, DH 5. Napoli, 1B 6. Gomes, LF 7. Saltalamac...

Ross, Middlebrooks leave game after collision

After colliding while pursuing a foul pop-up in the top of the fifth inning, Red Sox catcher David Ross and third baseman Will Middlebrooks both exited Wednesday's game against the Minnesota Twins. Ross exited soon after the collision, while Middlebrooks stayed in the game for a couple of innings before Pedro Ciriaco replaced him at third base in the seventh inning. The team...

Red Sox Appear to Have Dodged Bullet, As Losing Will Middlebrooks for Extended Period Would Be Disastrous

Will Middlebrooks is off to a very rough start, yet he is still one of the most important players in the Red Sox’ lineup. Nothing makes that more evident than when Boston is faced with the idea of not having the third baseman. Middlebrooks collided with David Ross while fielding a popup along the wall in foul territory on Tuesday night. Both Middlebrooks and Ross exited the game...

Red Sox' Will Middlebrooks, David Ross exit with injuries

They both tried to stay in the game, but ultimately, Will Middlebrooks and David Ross had to exit last night's game against the Minnesota Twins.  Middlebrooks and Ross collided on an attempt to catch a shallow foul pop-up.  Middlebrooks made the catch, but it may have come at the expense of both his and Ross' bodies. Alex Speier of WEEI says Ross stayed in the game...

Your Morning Dump...where another day, another injury for the Red Sox

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. According to Red Sox manager John Farrell, both David Ross and Will Middlebrooks were classified as day-to-day after leaving the Sox’ 6-1 loss to the Twins early Tuesday night. Middlebrooks (right side...

David Ross Says Leg Is ‘A Little Sore’ After Collision With Will Middlebrooks

It appears that David Ross won’t be out for long after injuring his leg during a collision with third baseman Will Middlebrooks on Tuesday night. Pete Abraham caught up with the Red Sox backup catcher, who said he could probably play if he played a different position. The Red Sox listed Ross’ injury as a left quad contusion. “Obviously I’m a little sore, but I think I just...

Will Middlebrooks Back From Run in With Ross

Will Middlebrooks, the third base middle-of-the-order bat for the Boston Red Sox, was removed in the seventh inning of Tuesday’s game after colliding with backup catcher, David Ross. Middlebrooks, who has developed a reputation for being injury prone in his young career, stayed in the game immediately after the collision (Ross left immediately) in the fifth inning, but eventually...

Will Middlebrooks, David Ross Makes First Starts Since Collision As Red Sox Look to Salvage Series Split

The Red Sox will get their starting third baseman back Thursday night, as Will Middlebrooks is scheduled to get the start after sitting out Wednesday’s contest with lingering soreness from his collision with David Ross. Ross will also be back in the lineup in the series finale, allowing Red Sox Nation to breathe a collective sigh of relief that both injuries turned out to be minor...

David Ross Says Banged-Up Red Sox ‘Weathering Storm,’ Will Turn Things Around (Video)

David Ross left Tuesday night’s game against the Twins in the fifth inning after colliding with Will Middlebrooks as they both tried to catch a foul ball. Middlebrooks left the game after the sixth inning. The two are the most recent Sox players to suffer injury, and the numbers seem to be piling up. Closer Joel Hanrahan was placed on the DL on Tuesday, and Andrew Bailey left Monday’s...

Red Sox Suffer Sloppy ‘Eighth Inning Uh-Oh’ Against Royals in Otherwise Forgettable Game (Video)

The Red Sox might have lost more than a game on Tuesday night after a couple of injuries left the team without Will Middlebrooks and David Ross for the later innings. That said, they still did lose a game in pretty unattractive fashion. Boston couldn’t solve Twins starter Scott Diamond and only scratched across one run in the ninth inning to avoid a shutout while falling 6-1 to...

The Red Sox have dropped six of their last seven and the bandwagon is quickly emptying out. Bad luck, sloppy play, poor pitching and injuries have been the main issues. One of those injured is Will Middlebrooks. He is hurt much more than he or the Red Sox have led you to believe. An inside source has told me that Middlebrooks has two broken and separated ribs. The third baseman...

Red Sox Academy: Batting Stance

Will Middlebrooks teaches the proper batting stance.

MASH Unit: Two more Sox fall down, go boom

The Guru Contributing Writer Add a couple more names to the growing list of the battered and the broken. Red Sox catcher David Ross (left quad) and third baseman Will Middlebrooks (right side) both left Tuesday night’s 6-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins after colliding near the visitors dugout. Both are described as day-to-day. Not sure why, but I had a Beltre/Ellsbury flashback...

Pedro Ciriaco Playing Third in Place of Injured Will Middlebrooks As Allen Webster Takes Mound

They say you can’t have good pitching without good defense, and Allen Webster might put that mantra to the test on Wednesday with Pedro Ciriaco manning the hot corner. Ciriaco could be seeing some increased playing time at third base in the coming days and, after a shaky defensive performance on Tuesday night against the Twins, will certainly be the focus of some scrutiny as he...

Cold bats plague Red Sox in series sweep to Rangers

For the first time this year, the Boston Red Sox were outplayed in a series after being swept by the Texas Rangers over the weekend.  The Rangers starting pitching was no match for the Red Sox hitters as Boston was able to manage just four runs in the series. Yu Darvish’s start on Sunday was the highlight of the series as he struck out 14 Boston hitters on Sunday after surrendering...

Red Sox-Twins Live: Allen Webster Ready to Make Second Career Start, Prove He’s Already Big League Material

5:55 p.m.: John Farrell provided an update on both David Ross and Will Middlebrooks. Ross is apparently feeling better and can get down into a catcher’s position, so he is available on an emergency basis in this game. Middlebrooks, on the other hand, is unavailable, although tests revealed no fractures. The third baseman is dealing with soreness in his rib cage, and Farrell described...
