Astros (12-31) at Pirates (25-18) 1;35 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT It’s dumb to call this a big game, but the Pirates are somewhat in need of a better effort today. They were lucky to escape with a victory on Friday, couldn’t get going at the plate yesterday, and are now at risk of dropping a home series to the awful Astros. Tonight’s starters… Lucas Harrell (3-4, 5.11) vs. Jeff Locke (3-1, 3.15) Harrell’s numbers aren’t as bad as the other two Houston starters this weekend (not high praise, at all) but he’s been dreadful in his last three starts (8.79 ERA). He faced the Bucs twice last year and allowed 7 runs over 10.2 innings. Locke has continued to be solid. More hits fell in against him in his last start but he improved on getting more strikeouts and fewer walks, which is key for him. He hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a start in over a month.

Pedro Alvarez struck with a massive home run into the Allegheny to tie the game. (Photo credit: David Hague) Pedro Alvarez will frustrate the hell out of you. Pedro Alvarez will be unwatchable at the plate. Pedro Alvarez will fly south of the Mendoza Line for a month and a half. After a Rough Start, Alen Hanson Has Done a Complete 180

Alen Hanson has done a complete 180 both offensively and defensively since being benched for a few games in April. Ground balls are supposed to lead to easy outs. When you see a routine grounder hit to shortstop, you expect an out. There’s usually no feeling that the play could go wrong. You get ready to write “6-3″ in your scorebook, even before the play is finished. There’s...

Q&A: Vic Black, Pirates’ Future Closer

Vic Black is the heir apparent to the closer’s job in Pittsburgh. The 24-year-old right-hander won’t be replacing Jason Grilli in the near future, but he may be joining Grilli in the Pirates’ bullpen. Four years after being drafted 49th overall out of Dallas Baptist University, Black looks close to big-league ready. Black cooks with gas: His fastball sits in the mid-to-high...

John Sickels Releases His Latest Draft

Over at Minor League Ball, John Sickels has released version two of his mock draft. He has many of the same players listed in the top 15-20 as everyone else recently, though he has a new name attached to the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Sickels has Georgia HS outfielder Clint Frazier going to the Pirates with the ninth overall pick. Frazier has been in the top six for almost all of the...

Pirates fan leaps into Allegheny River to claim home run ball (Video)

As previously noted on Outside the Boxscore, fans will pretty much do anything for a home run ball and one Pittsburgh Pirates fan proved that last week. The fan's name was Bobby Zappala and he got a little wet trying to track down a Pedro Alvarez home run ball that landed in the Allegheny river: Your browser does not support iframes. Kudos to you Bobby, your dive was...

Astros fielders collide on popup, giving Pirates walk-off win (Video)

The Houston Astros lost another game in an embarrassing fashion that only the Astros could pull off. On Friday night, the Astros were tied at 4-4 with the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. In the bottom of the ninth with two outs, the Pirates loaded the bases, but Astros pitcher Edgar Gonzalez got Pirates batter Russell Martin to pop up to short center field to send the game into...

Liriano gives Bucs a boost

The Pirates activated free agent signee Francisco Liriano last weekend, and he impressed in his first two starts. The veteran lefty He has gone 2-0 with a sparkling 1.64 ERA and 16 strikeouts.PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko caught up with Liriano recently.

Pirates lose to Astros in 11 innings

Final: Astros 4, Pirates 2 (box) WP: Jose Cisnero (1-0, 4.00 ERA) LP: Bryan Morris (1-2, 3.68 ERA) SV: Jose Veras (6, 3.71 ERA) A.J. Burnett pitched stellar, as usual, giving up just one run over seven innings. He did walk four batters and give up five hits, but was helped out by seven strikeouts and two double plays. Burnett has a 2.57 ERA this season in ten starts and somehow the...

Pirates 5, Astros 4

The Pirates were in significant danger of an embarrassing loss to the Astros for most  of the night on Friday…but in the end, the Astros were the ones embarrassed. Badly. The bottom of the ninth inning was an absolute mess. Only one person truly did something right in the inning – Andrew McCutchen singled to right to put men on the corners with one out. Marte had reached...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Houston Astros – Game 44

To say I’m disappointed would be an understatement.  There is a very real argument that the Pirates should be on the verge of being swept by the Astros. It reminds me too much of last year when the Pirates were amazing against the challenging part of their schedule but fell apart once it let up.…

Houston Astros collide, allow winning run to score (GIF)

The Houston Astros are by far the worst team in baseball, so the way they lost Friday night’s game in Pittsburgh was quite fitting. Houston blew a 4-1 and lost 5-4 after two players collided when they were trying to catch a pop up to shallow right that allowed the winning run to score. The Pirates loaded the bases and Russell Martin was facing Edgar Gonzalez with two outs. Martin...

E-stros help Bucs walk it off

Maybe a win against the Astros should have been easier and faster, but in the end the Astros handed it over.  An error allowed the Pirates to win, 5-4.  It was a weird game all around, one that saw Brandon Inge play 1st base and a homerun into the river. Jeanmar Gomez started for the…

Brett Wallace – Familiar Face In A Familiar Place

Brett Wallace was once thought of as a top prospect within most Major League Baseball circles.  Originally drafted 13th overall in the 2008 MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals, he was the main centerpiece of a trade that brought over current Cardinals leftfielder, Matt Holliday, from the Oakland A’s to St. Louis. Despite being so talented, his stay with the A’s was short-lived...
