Homer Bailey really isn't a very good pitcher, but he's always been the sort of pitcher that gives the Pirates fits. He throws hard and when he mixes that with his slider, the Pirates generally look helpless against him, even if that doesn't happen against most other teams. Coming into tonight, he was 6-0 against the Pirates with a 1.79 ERA and a 2.65 K/BB ratio. The Pirates were helpless against him a week ago. For whatever reason, the Pirates were a different team against Bailey tonight. The Reds got out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Pirates got both runs back on a crazy sequence of events in the top of the second that included a Garrett Jones stolen base, Rod Barajas beating out a double play, Clint Barmes doubling, and Barajas somehow scoring from first base on that double. In the third, Alex Presley lead off with a triple, Neil Walker bombed a homer to almost dead center, and then the Pirates strung together a bunch of hits and got two more runs ...

The Reds have selected Nick Travieso in the first round of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft.
Fastball – Has gotten as high as 99 MPH, sits 92-95.
Slider – Good pitch with late breaking action on it.
Change up – It needs some work, but flashes itself as a solid pitch at times.
Everyone in action today.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist, Flea, took batting practice at the Cincinnati Reds’ Great American Ballpark.
He’s in town for a concert. Check out the Reds uniform and the shoes.
“I’m speaking with Dusty (Baker) about getting in the lineup tonight,” Flea said. ”I’m looking forward to it.”
The Reds have selected Jesse Winkler in the compensation round (#49) of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft.
Height: 6′ 3″
Weight: 200 lbs
Bat: He has power to the pull side and a very advanced approach. The lefty can hit line drives to all fields.
Defense: He is likely limited to left field or first base as he isn’t much of a runner...
The Pirates didn't play a very good game on Wednesday. That pretty much goes without saying. Brad Lincoln had a tough start, getting touched up for five runs in four innings. Johnny Cueto dominated the Pirates for much of the night, holding them to just three hits in his first seven innings of work. For a long portion of the game, the Pirates seemed headed for their usual, ineffectual...

We’re going to begin a new semi-annual series here at Diamond Hoggers. When a big league hitter takes what we would guess is his last at-bat of his Major League career, we’ll run one of these bad boys. Today’s Tombstone? Reds not so super-sub Mike Costanzo.
I really think Mike Costanzo’s purpose in life was to become the whipping boy of my buddies for a few weeks in time...

As Pittsburgh's A.J. Burnett continued his recent mastery last week against the Cincinnati Reds, Homer Bailey managed to baffle the Pirates yet again.
With Burnett and Bailey each riding three-start winning streaks, runs could be at a premium Tuesday night as Pittsburgh tries for a fifth consecutive road victory over NL Central-leading Cincinnati in the opener of a three-game...
In 2008, the Pittsburgh Pirates selected Pedro Alvarez with the second pick in the MLB Entry Draft. The pick was monumental for the Pirates who were finally starting to take players based on skill instead of signability. Standing in their way was Scott Boras, Alvarez's agent, who was -and still is- notorious for getting teams to break the bank at the signing deadline. It didn...
Pedro Borbon, who pitched 10 years for the Cincinnati Reds and
helped the Big Red Machine win back-to-back World Series titles,
died of cancer on Monday. He was 65.
Only Pirates fans could find, and dwell on, the negative in taking the absolute best player available to them in the draft. Four potential aces coming through the system is never a bad thing. That’s the future though, let’s worry about the present. That is a three game series against the division leading Reds. The [...]
