Ben Whitehead Contributing Writer The Boston Red Sox (32-22) will try to earn a split in their four-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies (26-27) tonight, as they have lost two out of the first three. The Sox tried to make a ninth-inning comeback Wednesday, but they fell one run short, as Jonathan Papelbon got his second save in as many nights. Tonight, Franklin Morales gets the nod for the Red Sox in a spot start. Morales began the season on the DL with back issues and a pectoral injury. Last season, Morales split time between the rotation and the bullpen. He threw 76.1 innings with a 3.77 ERA, striking out 76 and walking 30. The lefty held opponents to a .224 batting average. Morales has made a total of five appearances between Greenville (A), Pawtucket (AAA) and Portland (AA). He is 1-1 with a 3.18 ERA in 17.0 innings pitched and has struck out 13 and walked seven. Here is the Sox lineup for their final game with the Phillies (first pitch – 7:05 pm EDT): 1. Ellsbury, CF ...

Red Sox Activate Franklin Morales; Demote Aceves

The Boston Red Sox have activated left-handed pitcher Franklin Morales from the disabled list just in time for their May 28 game with the Philadelphia Phillies. Morales has yet to pitch in the Majors this season due to a bulging disk in his back. Morales can start and relieve, but MLB.com's Red Sox beat writer Jason Mastrodonato reports that Morales will pitch out of the bullpen...

Franklin Morales Excited to Be Back on Mound, Help Red Sox in Winning Effort (Video)

Franklin Morales returned to the mound just in time for the Red Sox. With Clay Buchholz still sidelined with a collarbone issue, Boston needed a spot starter, and it just so happened that Morales was finishing up his rehab assignment and ready to return to the big club for his season debut. The result Thursday was a 9-2 victory over the Phillies, and a win for Morales in his first...

Cutting it up this time around

Eric D. Schabell Contributing Writer He has been out of the Red Sox rotation all of 2013, until Thursday night that is. Franklin Morales was rehabbing a left pectoral strain since the start of this season, but he was also focusing on his cutter. Last year he threw the cutter only 1% of the time. That means one pitch out of a hundred, or almost never. Thursday night he was back...

Jonathan Papelbon Discusses Fenway Return, Says Boos ‘How They Love You in This City’ (Video)

Red Sox fans didn’t show Jonathan Papelbon much affection when he sprinted in from the visitors’ bullpen at Fenway Park on Tuesday. Papelbon apparently felt the love, though. “That’s how they love you in this city, man. That’s just how it is,” said Papelbon, who was booed when entering the game in the ninth inning. “I feel like the first time I got booed at Yankee Stadium...

Red Sox Activate Franklin Morales for First Time This Season, Option Alfredo Aceves to Pawtucket

Alfredo Aceves‘ latest stint in Boston lasted just one day. Red Sox manager John Farrell announced Tuesday that the right-hander, who allowed one run on seven hits and three walks in a win Monday night, has been optioned to Triple-A and replaced on the roster by Franklin Morales. This marks a return to the majors for Morales, who began the season on the disabled list. While rehabbing...

Jacoby Ellsbury Earns ‘Running Retaliation’ As Red Sox Run Away From Phillies in Win (Video)

Franklin Morales won his first start of the season for the Red Sox, but Jacoby Ellsbury stole the show — and a lot of bases. Ells swiped five bags against the Phillies on Thursday night, and in doing so he set a new Red Sox team record. He also might have earned a little bit of revenge after he was plunked in the middle innings of the game, but who’s to say what does and doesn’t...

Papelbon Wins This Sibling Battle, But We'll be Back...

Photo courtesy of NESN. "Sibling Rivalry." I like that term for the little rivalry that Jonathan Papelbon has with the Red Sox. It went to a new level last night when the Red Sox were able to mount a rally against Pap, but Pap was able to finish us. Well, he's one of the best closers in the game. He's like Mariano Rivera, in that if you happen to get a win off...

De Fratus Proclaims Himself Papelbon’s Protege

Justin De Fratus, image- AP On the latest edition of the PhoulBallz Minor League Podcast, Phillies reliever Justin De Fratus joined me and my co-host Tug Haines as our guest.  Among the topics of discussion was the type of impact that veteran teammates have had on him thus far in his big league career. While sharing his thoughts on Phils closer Jonathan Papelbon, the 25-year-old...

Lee gem, Papelbon save, sink BoSox

Cliff Lee pitched eight innings of four-hit ball and Jonathan Papelbon earned his first save at Fenway Park as a Red Sox opponent on Tuesday night, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-1 victory over Boston. Michael Young and Domonic Brown homered for the Phillies, and Erik Kratz singled in the tiebreaking run in the seventh inning to snap Boston's four-game winning streak...

Red Sox-Phillies Live: David Ortiz Starts at First Base As Franklin Morales Makes Season Debut

4:14 p.m.: David Ortiz and Mike Napoli will flip-flop on Thursday. Napoli, who started Wednesday’s game, will get the night off, while Ortiz will play first base and hit cleanup. Mike Carp will get another start in left field with a right-hander on the hill, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia will be behind the dish for Franklin Morales’ first action of 2013. The rest of Thursday’s...

Afternoon Red Sox Delight - 5/30

After falling last night, the Boston Red Sox look for a split of their four-game home-and-home series tonight with the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. If you live in the Red Sox television market you can catch the game on NESN. If you live in the Phillies television market, you can catch the game on CSN Philly. If you don'...

Red Sox Rally Late But Can’t Overcome Power Display Led by ‘Dominant Dom’ Brown (Video)

Domonic Brown has always been a highly touted prospect in the Philadelphia system. Against the Red Sox, he’s showing why. Brown homered twice to lead a four-home-run Phillie attack against John Lackey and the Sox, and a late rally in the ninth against old friend Jonathan Papelbon wasn’t enough for Boston. Despite some late heroics, the power display from Philadelphia won the...

Ryan Dempster Acknowledges Mistakes Made, Says His Pitching, Team Will Bounce Back (Video)

The Red Sox stumbled against the Phillies on Tuesday night at Fenway Park as former Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon closed out the ninth in 1-2-3 fashion. Sox starting pitcher Ryan Dempster didn’t have his best outing of the season, pitching seven innings and giving up two runs on six hits. The right-hander falls to 2-6 on the season, and acknowledged after the game that he struggled...

Four Bases: Red Sox 3, Phillies 4

The first inter-league game of the series didn’t exactly go as planned. With the pitcher hitting, the Red Sox lacked some punch, and now have to hope for a series split. Worst of all, the Red Sox saw the Jonathan Papelbon super fist pump. Here are the four bases: First Base: His story may have some cobwebs on it, but I still find Daniel Nava‘s tale entrancing from time to time...
