Raise the Jolly Roger!:
Pirates (37-25) at Cubs (24-35)
2:20 PM–Wrigley Field, Chicago
TV: ROOT, WGN
The Bucs look to break out the brooms for the second straight series against the Cubs, which would complete a very nice bounce-back from the sweep in Atlanta. It would also give them some huge momentum going in to an exciting homestand.
Jeff Locke (5-1, 2.45) vs. Edwin Jackson (1-8, 6.29)
I thought Locke pitched a lot better than his line in his last start…although the reverse has probably been true for him a couple of times this year as well. The lefty is still throwing the ball quite well and is even increasing his strikeout totals, which is a key to sustaining his success.
Jackson has continued to a be a total mess for the Cubs after signing a big deal this winter. Can you imagine if the Pirates had wound up with him instead of AJ Burnett, as they originally intended?

In my day three preview I pointed out how the Pittsburgh Pirates have gotten some good value prospects on day three of the draft, taking people like Casey Sadler, Phil Irwin, and Adalberto Santos after the 20th round. The problem with that approach is that you don’t always know those guys will be prospects. Sure, you might like those guys due to their numbers, stuff, or whatever...
Below are the top Runs Created* totals in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ farm system from the last week. The rankings include every hitter who had an at-bat for a Pirates’ minor league affiliate, not including DSL teams, and with no limitations on whether the hitter has prospect eligibility. Players who spent time at different levels are counted multiple times, once for each level,...
The Pirates took Gerrit Cole with the first overall pick of the 2011 MLB Draft.
Just over two years removed from being picked first overall in the 2011 MLB Draft, Gerrit Cole will make his major league debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night against the San Francisco Giants.
Cole entered this season as a consensus top 10 prospect in baseball. Baseball America ranked him...
The Pirates’ outfield could play a big role in their playoff push. (Photo by: David Hague)
After a 2-4 road trip, things look just a little bleaker for the Pirates.
Every Monday, l break down the playoff odds from Baseball Prospectus, FanGraphs and ClayDavenport.com. This week, those projections dropped a little bit because the Bucs were swept in Atlanta and could not close their...
The Pirates finally scored some runs for A.J. Burnett on Saturday, but he didn’t need many in one of his best performances of the season.
A.J. only struck out five and benefited from a few sharply hit outs, but he was remarkably efficient and gave the Pirates exactly what they’ve been looking for – an outing deep in to the game. Before today, no Pirate starter had even started...
Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed starting pitcher Jeff Karstens recently underwent shoulder surgery which will sidelined him for at
least the next three months, according to Tom Singer of MLB.com.
Dr. Neal ElAttrache performed the procedure – debridement of
Karstens’ rotator cuff and labrum – Friday in Los Angeles. The initial
prognosis is that Karstens will be able...
Sluggish offense has been an issue for the Pirates all season, Garrett Jones has been fairly productive in a platoon role with Gabby Sanchez at first base. Jones is hitting .265 with six home runs and 29 RBI. On June 2 he did something no Pirate had done before. He smashed a 463-foot home run into Allegheny River. PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko spoke with Jones recently.
Nick Kingham has been promoted to Altoona.
Nick Kingham has been promoted to the Altoona Curve, Pirates Prospects has learned. The move is not yet official, and no corresponding moves have been announced. Kingham will leave for Altoona tomorrow. In 67 innings this year with Bradenton, Kingham posted a 3.09 ERA and a 71:14 K/BB ratio. That doesn’t include tonight’s start, which...
Well, that was strange. Jeff Locke seemed to get off to a really good start, but completely unraveled as the afternoon went on and he stopped being able to find the strike zone. He gave up a run before he gave up a hit and walked seven hitters. Justin Wilson bailed him out of trouble in the sixth, but served up a three-run home run to Cody Ransom in the seventh (just the second he...
Nick Kingham takes the mound for Bradenton tonight, looking to continue his strong start to the year, which landed him a spot in the Florida State League All-Star game. Altoona is off today.
