It seems like poor form to try and take something positive out of this game because this game was pretty terrible, but, well, why dwell on the obvious?
Really, the only positive from this whole game is that despite the lackluster result, Charlie Morton does appear to be stronger as a result of his Tommy John surgery. Morton's average fastball velocity in 2010 was almost 93 mph, in 2011 it dropped to 91.4, and last year it was only 89.9 mph. Tonight, his fastball averaged between 93 and 94 and it got as high as 97. It's been a long time since Charlie Morton could rare back and bring that kind of heat, and I suspect that it's something that's going to be beneficial for him once he settles in a bit. He threw some really nice-looking curveballs tonight, too, and his curve generated seven swings and misses. Combined with the extra heat from his fastball and he got five strikeouts in his five innings. The sinker worked pretty well, too, since six of his eight non-stri...
BEST OF MAXIM
Let's be straight about this: Charlie Morton is probably my favorite Pirate. The guy came through the minors with all of the talent in the world, but couldn't get it right in the big leagues. He completely scrapped his approach and rebuilt himself from the ground up, turning in one of the more pleasantly surprising Pirate performances in recent memory in 2011. It seemed like...
I didn’t have one specific thing I wanted to write about, but a few notes I was thinking about. So I went with more of a notes column, with three different topics below.
Jeff Locke hasn’t regressed, but instead has improved his game.
**About a month ago we were talking about Jeff Locke being a regression candidate going forward. That sparked the usual responses of “what if...

Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen displayed some fancy feet as he danced back to second base, literally, after falling for a bluff of a pickoff move by Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Stephen Fife during the third inning of Friday night's game at PNC Park.
McCutchen had reason to be feeling a little relaxed, as he had...

The Pittsburgh Pirates haven’t made a decision on who will go down to make room for Charlie Morton on the 25-man and 40-man roster. One issue is that A.J. Burnett has been scratched from his start tomorrow with a right calf injury. Burnett made the team aware of his injury yesterday.

That was the worst game the Pirates have played all season. Pittsburgh pitchers surrendered a season-high 17 hits in the 10-o loss, continuing the struggle after allowing 15 base hits Wednesday night.
Starter Matt Cain and the Giants held the Bucs’ lineup to three hits after it totaled...

We all watched Gerrit Cole impress in his Major League debut Tuesday night. I wrote about it. You (hopefully) read it, and now it’s on to the next one.
But before it is on to the next one, I wanted to compile the best insight about Cole becoming a part of the...

Earlier today I was recording a podcast with James Santelli and Tom Bragg, talking about the rotation, and what moves would need to be made once guys like Jeanmar Gomez, James McDonald, and Wandy Rodriguez returned. Most of the conversation surrounded the fact that the Pirates...
ST. LOUIS -- With a strong bullpen, solid rotation and a lineup led by one of the game's rising stars in center field, the Pirates appear poised to end the longest streak of losing seasons in U.S. team sports history.
Oh, wait. You say you've heard that before. For the past two years, in fact.
Indeed, 2013 is feeling a lot like 2012 and 2011, when center fielder Andrew...

On Sunday, we were worried that the Pirates' offense was never going to wake up. On Tuesday, the Pirates scored eight runs. On Wednesday, the exploded for 12 runs and 18 hits. Those 18 hits were a result of multi hit nights from Starling Marte (four singles), Jordy Mercer (three singles), Andrew McCutchen (a double and two singles), Gaby Sanchez (a double and two singles), and...
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Jeff Locke allowed just two hits over seven innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates edged the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-0 on Friday night.
Locke (6-1) struck out five and walked one to win his sixth straight decision while shaving his ERA to 2.19. Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run double in the third inning off Stephen Fife (1-2).
Jason Grilli worked out of a two-on, no...

The Bucs kick off a weekend series against the last-place LA Dodgers tonight. Yep, last place. Despite spending tons and tons of money over the past year, the Dodgers have struggled (injuries haven’t helped) so far this season. That said, they are still a very talented club and swept the...
Tyler Glasnow makes his last start before the All-Star break, trying to finish off his great first half on a high note. Altoona was rained out yesterday against New Britain. The two teams play again two weeks from now in Altoona, the last time they meet this season. Bradenton is on their All-Star break. They will resume play on Monday. For a look at the possible starters over the...

The Bucs broke out the bats to neutralize a pretty ugly night of pitching on Tuesday, and the result was another comfortable victory against the Giants.
We finally saw the Pirates really explode on offense – they pounded a season high 18 hits and scored a season high 12 runs. Barry Zito was bad (as he has been all season on the road), but the Pirates were able to take full advantage...
