After a full week of the Pirates getting strong starting pitching, shaky relief work in big spots, and absolutely zero offense, the Pirates went out and scored three runs in the first inning and put up a five spot (62.5% of the total runs scored in their first six games) for the game while the bullpen had to go 6 2/3 innings after Wandy Rodriguez left early with a hamstring problem in the third inning. This is exactly why I try not to get worked up over things a week into the season; after a full week of seeing one thing, suddenly we got nine innings of a game filled with something else entirely.  The bullpen was great in this game, but I suppose the place to start is probably with the offense. Besides Andrew McCutchen's homer on Sunday, haven't done much of anything that didn't come against Carlos Marmol in almost a week. Then, in the first inning the Pirates got a Starling Marte single, an Andrew McCutchen double, a Pedro Alvarez walk, and a two-run Travis Snider s...

Wandy Rodriguez Has Hamstring Strain, Not Likely to Make Next Start

Wandy Rodriguez isn’t likely to make his next start. Photo credit: David Hague The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced that Wandy Rodriguez has been diagnosed with a left hamstring strain, and that it is not likely he will make his next scheduled start. That start was originally scheduled for Sunday. The Pirates haven’t placed Rodriguez on the disabled list, despite saying the...

McCutchen Homer Only Respite as L.A. Completes Sweep 6-2

Dodger Stadium continued to be a ravine of terror for the Pirates, but Sunday provided a fresh face to engineer the 6-2 L.A. victory and a weekend sweep. Adrian Gonzalez started to earn the $127 million he will collect the next six seasons after arriving from Boston last August. The first baseman went 3-for-4 with four RBI to complete his destruction of Pirates pitching (7-for-11...

Bucs lose Wandy, bring back Zoltan, and get a win

The Bucs played a solid game and earned a much needed win on Monday night, but they may have suffered a big loss as well. Wandy Rodriguez got off to a pretty good start and the Pirates’ early lead seemed to be in good hands with him on the mound. In the third inning, though,Wandy walked off the mound and started doing all kinds of stretches, clearly feeling something wrong in his...

First Pitch: Who Could Step Into the Rotation if Wandy Goes on the DL?

At the start of the season, the Pittsburgh Pirates looked to have a great situation at the top of their rotation. A.J. Burnett had made 31+ starts each year since 2008. Wandy Rodriguez had made 30+ starts each year since 2009. They looked like guys who could give the Pirates a full seasons worth of starts, while potentially putting up 200 innings each. Rodriguez left tonight’s...

Pirates 5, Diamondbacks 3

Andrew McCutchen drove in two runs, Garrett Jones homered and the Pittsburgh Pirates snapped a five-game losing streak by beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-3 on Monday night. McCutchen doubled in a run in the Pirates' three-run first inning and broke a 3-all tie with his sacrifice fly after Starling Marte's leadoff triple in the fifth. Jeanmar Gomez (1-0) got the victory...

Pirates Win 5-3, Wandy Rodriguez Suffers Hamstring Tightness

Garrett Jones hit his first homer of the season. (Photo credit: David Hague) The Pirates finally got a few runs to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, 5-3. Andrew McCutchen and Travis Snider both drove in two runs to break Pittsburgh’s four-game losing skid Monday night. The good news of a victory was mitigated, though, by the third-inning exit of Pirates starter Wandy Rodriguez. The...

A win for Wandy

A bittersweet night in Phoenix saw a Pirates win as well as an injury to perhaps the Pirates’ best pitcher.  The Arizona heat warmed up the Pirates’ bats as they scored a season-high 5 runs to give them a 5-3 run over the Diamondbacks. Wandy Rodriguez was standing in the on-deck circle before he had…

Pirates swept in Los Angeles

The Pirates scored runs today!  A Pirates player homered today!  And the Pirates’ pitching allowed 6 runs, too many for Andrew McCutchen’s 2-run homerun to overcome. Jeff Locke made his 1st start of 2013 for the Pirates today, and he allowed the Dodgers to tie the score at 2 in the bottom of the 1st…

Swept out of LA: Dodgers 6, Pirates 2

The Bucs were swept out of Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon as their pitching finally failed them and the offense remained nonexistent (with the exception of one swing). The loss was the Bucs’ ninth in a row at Dodger Stadium, and they’ve now dropped four in a row overall and are a dismal 1-5 on the young season. Things were looking up in the top of the first, as Starling Marte...
