Phillies (40-45) at Pirates (52-31) 1:35 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT This is going to be another awesome day at the ballpark – PNC will be packed again as Pittsburgh celebrates the Fourth of July and the first place Pirates. The Bucs will look to take the series against the Phils and maintain the best record in baseball. It doesn’t get much better than that. Today’s starters… Cole Hamels (2-11, 4.58) vs. Gerrit Cole (4-0, 3.70) I have no idea what’s happened to Hamels this season. Eleven losses and an enormous ERA – the lefty has been having a very rough season, especially by his standards. The Pirates beat him in April, but he pitched pretty well in that game. Cole will look for a 5-0 start, although he’s only really ben excellent in one of his outings (at Los Angeles) in my opinion. Still, the righty is more than holding his own at the big league level so far and everyone is always going to be excited to see him pitch.

Game 83: Pirates 6 Phillies 5

This game turned on a quick sequence in that went like this: Andrew McCutchen single, Gaby Sanchez single on the next pitch, Russell Martin RBI single two pitches later, Pedro Alvarez three-run homer two pitches after that. That turned a frustrating 1-0 Phillies lead into a 4-1 PIrate lead. That gave the second half of the game a very different tone.  Specifically, it was the...

Carlos Zambrano's shoulder strain leaves 2013 comeback attempt in doubt

The "Big Z" Carlos Zambrano, walked off the mound of his last start for Triple-A Lehigh Valley and into the clubhouse where he was treated for a sore right shoulder. Braves' rally comes up short against Lee, Phillies

PHILADELPHIA -- Humberto Quintero and Ryan Howard hit home runs to give Cliff Lee a five-run cushion, and the Philadelphia Phillies held on for a 5-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night. Dan Uggla hit a three-run shot, and the Braves snapped Lee's streak of 11 straight games pitching at least seven innings and allowing three earned runs or less. But Lee (10-2) still...

Phillies rumors: Philadelphia to be 'active sellers'

The Philadelphia Phillies have players that contenders covet. The team's current issue is that they're still trying to determine if they are one of MLB's contenders. As the July 31 trade deadline approaches, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. will have to determine his stance. It's yet to be determined publicly, but Andy Martino of The New York Daily News reports that...

Ryan Howard “not doing the job”

Anyone who’s watched the Philadelphia Phillies know Ryan Howard is not the player he used to be. His average is around his career norms but the homerun power is just simply not there anymore. Even worse is that he looks completely lost against left handed hitters forcing Charlie Manuel to use him in a platoon role. The fans and media have ripped him many times this year but...

Count Jonathan Papelbon among the Yasiel Puig haters. Puig has taken the majors by storm since breaking into the Dodgers lineup on June 3, prompting many to trumpet his All-Star candidacy. Papelbon, frankly, thinks all this talk is ridiculous . "To me, it's an absolute joke. It's really kind of stupid if you ask me," the Phillies closer said on MLB Network Radio...
